I plan on building a computer but I don't know what graphics card to get.
I would prefer a 7970 but I've heard a lot of people complaining about coil whine. I really don't want coil whine in a graphics card.

I've been looking into which graphics card I want and I like these ones:
Radeon 7970 (I've heard this one has the most coil whine):

GTX 670:

I really like the 7970's performance, price, and it comes with 4 games.
I would only get a 670 just because it has a less chance of coil whine, and I like the back plate.

If anyone could recommend me a 7970 without coil whine that would be great. If not I'll have to settle with a 670.

Thanks

coil whine is inevitable. some have it some dont. there is no guarantee. the 7970 will perform better but if you are going to run more than 1 of them in a system, id say you should stay away from it for now. runt frames are in progress of being fixed

a 4gb 670 is a joke. it can never use the extra vram properly. the ftw model doesnt perform that well either due to a reference cooler.

or wait until the new 700 series GPUs when they start launching next week

As the troll said, I'd say that 95% of the people buying a $400 card are thinking that either from the getgo or sometime in the future, there might be a 2nd card.....especially with 3D and 144Hz monitors becoming routine. And there's worlds of differenc between SLI and CF

Well I have three rigs one with a Crossfire Sapphire HD 7950 a Crossfire Sapphire HD 7970 and a SLI Gigabyte GTX 670. I do not have coil whine in any of my systems. As for AMD/ATI cards i would only get Sapphire they seem to be the best. For the GTX 670 get a Gigabyte the 2 fan version is only $379 and performance wise it seems to be on par with the cards that cost $400 or more for less money.

Either card would work just fine for your needs it is just a matter of what you want if you are using just one monitor either would work. If you want to go for a Eyefinity/Surround AMD/ATI is still the best. Even though Nvidia does allow triple monitors on a single card AMD/ATI's drivers/hardware is still better at this time they simply have had more experience with it.

But as I said as far as coil whine I have not had any problems with it on any of my cards but I have only used Sapphire for AMD/ATI hardware. As for the 2gb ver's 4gb cards I have not seen the need to spend the extra money for the 4gb version's even running Surround at 5760x1080 my 2gb cards seem to work just fine.

Well I understand that I got what I could afford at the time. Have been running them since January on my i5 system and can't really say anything bad about them. $379 was about all I could manage for GPU's at the time any more and I would not have been able to get SLI. I know the difference in price is not a lot but it was just enough to throw my budget out the window at the time.

What surprised me was how cool they run with only the two fans instead of three running on the cards. I have yet to hear the fans running even after gaming for several hours. But I did not really know alot about Nvidia hardware after being with AMD/ATI for so many years it is the first Nvidia I have got since the 7800GS(AGP) died on me years ago. Not having anything from Nvidia to replace my AGP card I had to go with AMD/ATI and have been with them until I built my intel rig in January. Wanting to dual boot Windows 8 and OS X I went with intel/Nvidia for this build.

So did I make a mistake getting the two fan version?

get the 7970 it will perform better in the long run.... If not then wait for 700 series probably going to be re brand though with 10% boost if that, 400 re branded to 500 600 re branded to 700 there is a pattern. I upgraded gts 450 to 550 ti saw 5 more frames but i run vsync so no difference on most games..
