I've noticed there isn't a shortage of fanboys when it comes to AMD vs Nvidia, but I would love the most objective opinion I can get.

I heard that the next gen consoles are going to be using AMD cards, will that make a difference for the games that are going to be developed with those consoles in mind?

Finally, should I wait to buy a card until the next gen is released?

I am really new to this, so I appreciate your guys' help!

Well for $340 you can beat both the 680 and 7970 Ghz and leace $100+ in ya pocket

For single cards there's a good case for either the 7950 or 660 Ti....while the 660 Ti generally holds slight edge in fps, it's the frame latency issues that causes me concern.

Same with the 670 / 7970 and 680 / 7970 Ghz

However, if you think you might want to add a 2nd card, then Id go with nVidia

In your case Tom's Hardware recommends a 7970 for $400 and then overclocking to 7970 Ghz Edition specs for the best performance for the price. I was in the same position as you with a lower budget and I got a 7870 XT for $220 which is essentially a cheap 7950. Having coil whine while gaming on both cards I tried and not having PhysX make me wish I could have saved up and bought a 670. I would actually get the 680 if I were you and also if the price difference was not that much but it's your choice. The more cost effective thing to do would be to buy a 7970 or wait for the upcoming cards to release and then buy.
