3770k Annoyingly high temps

Hi all, I have a 3770K OC'd at 4.4ghz 1.125v with h80i cooling.

Under prime 95 I am seeing temperatures exceeding 95 celsius!!

I am using AS5 thermal paste, applied with a pea sized blob and spread evenly with credit card. I am also noticing 8-10 degrees temperature variation across cores in real temp. The AS5 has had 200+ hours break in now.

When gaming the 3770K is reaching temps of around 75 celsius using realvision ENB for skyrim or BF3 on Ultra settings.

GPU is GTX680 classified, it has a large blower fan which exhausts heat out the back of the case so I don't think this is playing a major part in heating my cpu.

I have read about delidding 3770k and using liquid pro, I could then lap the heatsink to get rid of the temp variations.

What I want to know is are these normal temps for this processor? Does it sound like I applied the AS5 wrong? Is it way too risky to lap and delid?

I attempted a 4.5ghz OC but Prime 95 was closing in on 106 degrees so I stopped instantly and underclocked to my stable (but hot) 4.4ghz OC.

Help me, I was hoping to achieve much better OC than this with 3770K but I'm scared to delid.a

Fractal r4 with 2x 140mm r2 fans on top, h80i mounted in push pull at back, 2x120 r2's in front and 1x120 r2 in bottom, no side fan.

Edit: I forgot to say, I don't know ambient temps in my room but I am going to guess around 27 celsius.

Edit 2: I have tested case in both positive and negative pressure fan configs, but noticed no difference in temps so I have opted for positive pressure in the hope it will keep dust out of my case.

I am pulling air into the case at the front and pulling it out through the top. The H80i is pulling air from outside the case and it is getting pulled out through the top. There is a fan at the bottom pulling air in from underneath the case, the case is raised of the ground of 'legs' that are about 3.5cm tall.

Edit:

RobCrezz: I am fairly sure the h80i is fine, I am monitoring the fans speeds and they are in accordance with standards stated by Corsair. I was thinking I mounted wrong but I don't see how, I followed instructions to the letter. What are common mounting mistakes?

Welcome to IvyBridge!

I'm currently running a 3770K at 4.5Ghz with a custom water loop and even then I need 1.27v for absolute stability. These aren't the best at overclocking, I know if I try and hit 4.6 temps go crazy. It's just something you have to live with ha.

Oh and i'm also using AS5.

1.125v at 4.4 is awesome though, mine definitely needs more than that else it'll crash on hard renders/conversions.

It did cross my mind, however I think for the risk/effort I can't really be bothered. Unless you think you'll be able to notice/be productive by a slight increase in clock speed then i'd just settle for what you get...

I'm more than happy with the computational power @4.5, maybe in a year or two I may have a tinker when things start to get a bit slow!

Ye jungle I don't know how to find out, because obviously when you alt+tab out of a game processor usage drops massively because the game is in the background. What is the correct way to measure processor usage while in game?

Its not just the fan on the H80, its the pump as well. If the pump isnt working correctly that could be the cause.

I have heard some people get small air locks. Try putting the case on its side and tap the radiator with the handle of a screw driver to try to clear any air bubbles causing a blockage- repeat this a few times.

o i have two screens so my task manager and gpu tweaker showing the voltages and usage is always on my second screen. so i know how it is doing. if you have 2 o screens try it out that will give you rough idea how much is been use. because if your cpu is using 100% on a game then there is a serious issue of either bottled neck or something else causing that much power to be used, therefore causing heat

I only have 1 screen. I am assuming it's not running at 100% while gaming as at 100% in prime 95 it reaches 95 celsius whereas while gaming it's reaching 75 celsius max.

I will try tapping rad when I get home and may reseat cooler.

Ok, I just took my h80i off the cpu, removed all the thermal paste on cpu heat sink and h80i heat sink using lint free cloth and alcohol being very careful, using only a slightly damped part no excess or dripping OBVIOUSLY :p

So both parts are clean, I have reapplied AS5 using the small pea method, no spread with credit card this time! So I reattached the H80i, so I assume my thermal paste spread is a nice, thin and even layer in the shape of a circle which easily covers the internal heatsink in the 3770k.

I fired up pc with same OC settings as before, 4.4ghz, 1.125v bclk 100mhz. I am seeing next to no difference in temps. So I am wondering has my overclock been done wrong? I set my system OC back to default settings in bios. Load back in and the temps being shown are the same as the 4.4ghz OC, that is probably because my voltage is the same at 4.4ghz as default setting. My default voltage for my chip appears to be 0.9-1.15 depending on load. My bios is set to auto voltage, the stock for this mobo.

So any ideas what's wrong? idle temps bouncing up and down around 35-45 celsius. Ambient temps 25 celsius. I will just run prime 95 to get load temps now.

ok, under load my voltage is at 1.096 and temps at 65 celsius. This is stock 3.6ghz, I heard some wierd ass clicky electrical sounds when running P95 then so I stopped it.

Edit: Oh I should say that since I reapplied the AS5 I am noticing only 2-3 degrees variation between cores now which is alot better than before.

well this is really wierd, I think these Ivy bridge chips are really confusing to OC. I am currently running prime95 for 15 mins at 4.7ghz OC at 3.3V and I'm hitting 95 celsius in Prime95...

I don't get it, I add another .2V to the system and add 300mhz to clockspeed and still I am recieving same temps as a 4.4ghz OC at 1.125.

1-check the cases temperature and the air float on the case
2-its probably a thermal paste problem did you installed the cooler on yourself?
3-remember that the 3770k is one of the most hot cpus out there!with a stock cooler you may get 35-45 playing a game so 95?yes 95 is way more than normal!

Well I found a stable 4.8GHZ OC @ 1.33v load temps under prime95 are 95-100C. However when playing games I am only reaching 75-80C, I am fairly happy this is stable as I don't fold or do anything other than gaming and I am at worst 26C away from TJmax which is ok for lifespan, if the proc lasts me 1-2 years before electromigration has a detrimental effect then I am happy because by then 3770K will be a lot cheaper.

Does this sound resonable to you guys?
