AMD AM3+ x8 FX-8350 Overheating

Hi, I am wanting to know if the new AMD AM3+ x8 FX-8350 4.0Ghz/8Core/16M/125W CPU is really bad when it comes to over heating, And how can I go about fixing it to make it cooler,(there is a side note for those that are going to say get a water cooler)

The stock heat sink just don't cut it for cooling, It get's above 65c within 5 mins of playing a game (all game's I've tested it on crash to system shut down) Doing damage to window's and my system/motherboard, And was wanting to know if there was a way to fix it, Bios dose nothing"Asus CrossHair V Formula" Upgrading to the "Z" in a few day's
After the USB port that the cooler plugged into got sparks from the cooler USB cable, Both now don't work, If it's cause of the motherboard being older than the CPU and not been tested on the board then I understand why it's overheating a lot more than


Note: I do have a water cooler but it's not working and being sent back for faults testing, with a new one to be sent back to me, It's less than a month old, And have been on the phone to their tech support for 2 day's talking about trying to get it to work,
2nd Note: my other CPU is not in the FX range but came out just be for the FX's were released,

you are right. the stock AMD cooler is inadequate for the fx8350.

since it seems like you're looking for a cheap solution, hunt down a Hyper EVO 212. it's cheap and effective. It should be good enough to get a moderate overclock out of your cpu as well.

I don't want to over clock and already have a CPU water cooler, It's under the warranty from the people who make it and the shop I got it from so I have 2 choices on returning it, The CPU on the other hand I knew full well that be for buying it that is why I had the water cooler, But as something that I'll only use for a week or so till I get my new water cooler returned to me that might do the trick,

Thanks but I'll just wait it out if I have to

the only option i can give you would be to pop the side of your case off, stick a room fan in the opening and hope that will let you use the pc without overheating.

I would try it once and see if it makes a big enough difference.

otherwise it looks like you should just shelve it till you get a working cpu cooler.

The stock cooler does sort of suck but it will not overheat with the CPU at stock settings.

What do you mean about plugging in your cooler to the USB port? Your cooler will plug into a fan pre-out on the motherboard. If you attempted to connect your CPU fan into a USB header then I am sure you caused some problems. I'm not sure how that would even be possible as the CPU socket and USB headers are usually at opposite ends of the motherboard.

+1 on the CM Evo 212 cooler.

The water cooler has a plug that can only be plugged into the 2nd USB port on the motherboard, If you've seen the (Thermaltake CL-W0217 Water 2.0) and all it's cable's you'd have to rethink what you've just said, You are not understanding what has been said,
I never said just the CPU fan alone and I know where the plug it meant to go, READ THE SIDE NOTE'S YOU BLIND R%&**(&^'

It saying that it's a WATER COOLER, and the USB plug is to CONTROL THE FAN'S SPEED, it's not for the power, WTF are you lot a bunch of read what you want trolls ?

i'm not sure what you're looking for. so purhaps we're having a comunication breakdown.

1) your water cooler is broke, so you can't use it
2) the stock AMD cooler isn't good enough
3) you don't want to spend a dime because you're getting the watercooler fixed/replaced, you just want a temp solution

~given the above three points are true and accurate for your situation, i fail to see what you want. i gave you the only advice you'll get given the above situation. which is to pop the side of the case and stick a room fan into the opening. see if that helps control the temps or not. if it doesn't work don't use the pc till you get the new/fixed cpu cooler you're waiting on.

No other advice to give. i can't wave a magic wand and tell you a super secret magic trick that will make the stock cooler suddenly work better. if you don't want to pop the side of the case, the only other advice i can give you is to UNDERVOLT your cpu... but since you don't want to overclock, i somehow doubt you'd undervolt it. so we're back to square one.

there is no super-secret way to make the stock amd cooler work better. it simply sucks. so either you aid it's cooling by sticking the room fan into the side of the case, OR you simply don't use the computer till you have a better cpu cooler..

Sorry I was pissed at (Cazalan) comment and sore I quoted their comment but looks like I quoted your's,

I've got a temp heat sink from a mate's PC, He's over sea's and not using it, added a fan onto it as well as the fan he already had on it, then put a big fan on the top on the case to push more cooler air into and out of it, Worked fine,

Also I've yet to overclock this CPU and will not do anything like that till I have everything ready to be overclocked, My board's bios is rather FKed up and won't let me do anything the ram I got was sold to be 2133HMz but only has 1333HMz as it's max,
Also I had a power cut out and fault with my CPU over heating last night and it blew out the power in the house, Hopefully it's the end of my super bad week
I'll be going back to my older ram first thing next week as soon as I get my new motherboard

which mb do you have? i wasn't aware too many AMD chipsets could work with ddr3 2133 ram? how do you know 1333 is the max? you do know that ddr3 2133 ram will read a clock speed of 1067mhz or 1066mhz right?

at those speeds you'll probably need your cpu/nb and HT to be over 2400mhz

They don't seem to be all that rare as I found when shopping for mobos. Some, if not all, of the Asus M5- series supports it, out of the box. MSI 990FXA supports it O.C. (perhaps others do as well) and I'm not sure about GByte. Sabertooth 990FX, unfortunately, does not. Some ASRock Extreme (if not other models) supports it as O.C. as well.

Still, it's a good question though as far as compatibility.

Otherwise, not sure why you'd bother helping someone with forum-directed anger control issues...good luck with that.

i'm talking about chipsets. you listed a plethora of 990FX chipset mbs... those are the latest ones and of course would be compatible. but i'm pretty sure compatibility with that level of DDR3 ram speed ends with the 970 chipset... anything older i think is incompatible. in fact the 970 chipset only supports overclocking slower ram up to 2133 speeds... not ram which has that speed natively...

As of the 21st I am upgrading to an Crosshair V Formula Z, I am using til then my Crosshair V formula, And the ram is Kingston HyperX Predator KHX21C11T2K2/16X 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 it has 2 profiles and yes I know this cause it's been on a post on those forums by a Kingston worker,Their post below
DDR3-1866 CL9-11-9-27 @1.65V
DDR3-1866 CL11-11-11-27 @1.5V
DDR3-1866 CL10-10-10-27 @1.5V
Also, per your motherboard's manual it is best to have the memory installed in slots DIMM_A2 and DIMM_B2 (the blue slots) when only two modules are installed for best performance. This would be for Dual Channel performance and may help with stability when running at 1866, if you do not already have the modules installed in this configuration, it would be best to reseat them into those slots. I was just elaborating on the post ish416 made. I wasn't the only one confused by your comments. You mention USB sparking, which is a sign something got plugged in the wrong port or shorted out. I've seen people do much odder things to a PC.

I suggest an attitude change or you won't get much help from this forum.

There is only 2 USB post's and I was told over the phone by a tech support from the place I got my water cooler from to try it,
My water cooler works now with my new motherboard, And have never looked back

@ngtar33 the board I was using was a 990FX,
