Hi all,

I have emailed Asus directly but hoping someone maybe able to assist in the meantime.

I have a self build machine with the X79 sabertooth. I won't give full spec as the system has been running fine for months.

About 2 months ago I upgraded to Win 8 which went fine and I had been using it without problem for 2 months or so.

I turned the pc on this morning to see the following message after post screen;
"the current bios setting do not fully support the boot device"

Having never seen this before I reset to optimal defaults and ensured ACHI was selected. This didn't resolve the issue. I disconnected all the HDDs including the SSD that the OS was running on. Again after restart I got the same message. Whenever I went into the UEFI, there were no HDDs listed in the boot area.

So after a couple of hours googling and looking through the forums here, I decided to update my BIOS to the latest version.

This went perfectly fine and if memory serves it updated to 4005. Once again I restarted and again got the same message as before.

I then once again reset to defaults and checked settings in relation to ACHI and EUFI boot priority. After restart this time, I now get nothing at all. My monitor won't even show that a device is connected. I took the side panel off the case and noted that the VGA_LED is now illuminated of starting the machine. (Tested GFX card in secondary machine and no fault with it).

Having slightly lost my temper I decided to use the USB flashback which seems to not even activate. Whilst holding the button in for 3 seconds, the icon blinks and the light on my USB stick illuminates for 2-3 seconds then nothing. USB stick light goes out and the USB flashback light stays solid with no other blinking.

I am at a total loss as to why this has happened. All the drives are working fine as tested in secondary machine as is the GFX card.

As mentioned the system has been running flawlessly for months. On my last login 2 days ago there has been no updates installed or movement of the machine so I am totally lost as to what the issue could be.

As mentioned I have emailed Asus but being the weekend I don't foresee a response until mid next week.

Any help advice would be greatly appreciated as I am almost resigning myself to the fact the Mobo has died.

Cheers

If your BIOS was version 1203 or older, there was a BIOS converter that necessarily has to run before upgrading to the latest BIOS. Did you run the converter to change the BIOS structure from .rom to .cap before applying the latest BIOS update (I just had to do this myself on my Pro board)? This was all for Windows 8 compatibility.

Hey, yeah i noticed the converter and ran it before updating to 4005. 4005 was the installed and running BIOS before it totally died. I had maybe 2 to 3 posts to the compatability error message before the machine totally bricked.

Seems odd how it has been working fine on Win8 for months and then wont boot. Then for it to be flashed to latest and still post and after 2-3 posts it totally dies.

Still trying odds and sods to see if i can at least get it posting again but its still stuck with the VGA_LED illuminated.

/pulling what little hair i have left out.....

Tried the MemOK button and the machine shutdown and rebooted still with the same problem :/

Any other ideas or is it a dead mobo?

You could try the clear CMOS jumper. See if that resets the board altogether. You might need to remove the battery and replace it during this procedure. See section 2-14 of your motherboard's manual.

After that, I'd try to do a BIOS Flashback to one of the older BIOS versions prior to the conversion. 1104 is where I was before I ran the conversion, though there's a 1203 out there. If you're able to use the BIOS Flashback utility to get back to an older version, then you can proceed with the rom-to-cap conversion and then procede with the latest update. Remember, for the rom-to-cap conversion you have to use the Asus BIOS Update utility in the BIOS menu. You can't use the BIOS Flashback function for the conversion.

If that doesn't work, I'd get the RMA process started with ASUS.

Thanks for your help Ubercake, had tried everything you mentioned but all to no avail. Spoke with the stockists that I bought the components from and they said they have had some issues with the X79 boards so best all round to send all the components back on an RMA and they will test everything their end. At least they maybe able to shed some light as to how it happened in the first place.

If its faulty they said that Asus repair 90% of their mobo's over replacing with a new on. Unfortunately if its a repair its gonna be shipped to Netherlands so its 5-6 weeks without a pc - woohoo!

Thanks again for your help though, really appreciate it.
