Not sure of all of my options or the "best" solution here. The organization I work for has a lot of licensing with Microsoft so I looked into Microsoft Lync. Not sure if that's necessarily the best. Looked at some other solutions and opinions and I couldn't find lots of people talking about Lync, so thought I would ask and do some more research before going with it.

We have a big house and we used to use MSN messenger with its group feature, but since it turned to skype, we switched to a free program called LANmessenger. Its open source, free to use, and allows pm's, group messaging, separate groups, everything.

You can go for IMiN messaging service. its a great app. The main idea behind developing this app was to solve the problem of communications in offices and work spaces or the ares where number of user is limited yet may be small or large. There are two version available, one is IMiN lite for small number of users and IMiN Communicator for large areas. You can choose as per your requirement.
