Yet Another Memory Question

So, this is the first time building a computer. I bought G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) that is
DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900)
Timing 9-10-9-28
Cas Latency 9
Voltage 1.5V

It came with 2 4GB sticks, but one does not work. I was wrist strapped and grounded, I took the absolute precautions to assure I wouldn't mess things up. So I decided to buy 2 more sticks of memory, because 4GB is barely recommended for gaming purposes. I went onto Newegg and there was a promo for G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) that is
DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666)
Timing 9-9-9-24
Cas Latency 9
Voltage 1.5V

Same manufacture
Same DDR3, but one the 4G are 1866 and the 8G are 1333
Timings for the 4G 9-10-9-28 and the 8 are 9-9-9-24
Same Cas Latency
Same Voltages

My question is how compatible are they to each other?

Can I use all 3 sticks, or should I cut my losses on the 4GB and just go for 16GB rather than having 20GB?

I am not entirely sure why I would need 16 or even 20 yet though, it is my first build, so I might be in that "i want the best" mentality.

Thank you for reading this! All comments, suggestions, and help are welcome.

The system will run at the lower specs; the faster RAM will be held back by the slower one.
I would use the newer sticks and keep the old one as a backup. 16 GB is more than enough. Any game you play, it can load entirely onto RAM.

Are the 1866 and the 1333 the speeds of the RAM?
What is the difference between PC14900 and PC10666?

don't use the 4gb one with your 16gb kit. the 4gb one would not give u faster speed it has as the 16gb kit is slower type. so keep that as your back up. 16gb is way more than enough for today's gaming needs.

This is the update.
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) were not compatible with my motherboard.. that was an error on my part as i didnt look on the QVL in my Motherboards manual. I have sent in an RMA to Newegg.

New question/issue.

I now have 2 sets of G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB).. 4x4GB in total
DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900)
Timing 9-10-9-28
Cas Latency 9
Voltage 1.5V

When I installed them all in A1, A2, B1, and B2. It will not POST.
I take A1 and B1 (Black Slots) out and go with my motherboards 2 DIMM installation recommendation and keep A2, and B2 in (Blue Slot)
Does not POST.
I switch them over to A1, and B1 (black slots).
Does not POST.
I take A2 out, leaving B2 in.
Does POST.
Then I install another into B1. I now have memory in B1 and B2.
Does POST.

My computer is able to properly read the total 8GB despite my motherboards recommendation.

Are my A1 and A2 DIMM slots bad?

There are many kits not on the QVL that will be compatible. The QVL is not the end all for compatibility. The RipJaws X series memory kits should be compatible with most motherboards on the market. Reaching the rated specifications of the RAM depends on CPU used.

Based on your test results, A1 and A2 slots are defective, so you will need to send the motherboard in for RMA exchange and that should solve the problems.

Hopefully two separate kits of RAM can work together in a single system. If you need 16GB, it is best to use a 16GB kit, but it does not hurt to try the existing RAM first to see if they can work well together.

Thank you
