Trouble overclocking msi gtx 660 twin frozr (non-ti)

So I'm using MSI Afterburner to do my overclocking, and I have a 750w continous power supply. But when I overclock I can only seem to run any game for about 10-15 minutes before it freezes. Metro Last Light will just freeze and BF3 will say "Direct X Error". When I don't Overclock the game plays fine. Here are the values I've recently tried that also didn't work. Core clock +50mHz, power 110%, memory clock 0%. It's not that the card is getting too hot, it seems to stay under 45. Any ideas as to why this is happening? I would really like to get the most out of these cards. Thanks.

It's called you can't overclock it. It's that simple. You can always flash a custom bios for the GPU to allow you to raise the voltage, but it's dangerous and voids the warranty.

What is happening is that is not a stable overclock.

I have one of those cards and it overclocks like a dead slug. I can't get +50Mhz on the GPU clock either, I'm not even sure if + 40MHz is stable.

What overclocking utility are you using? Since version 2.3.1, MSI afterburner no longer offers me the option to increase power and as far as I can tell, upping the GPU voltage does nothing.

I'm using msi afterburner. All it let's me do is change power output to 120 percent.

Has anyone told you about the silicon lottery? Just cause 2 cards are the same model doesn't mean the silicon underneath is identical. Our cards can't get more than +50Mhz on the core, so no way in hell are they going to get +86.

I'd try max power target. If you are hitting 130%+ on TDP after a Heaven run with +40mhz on the clock, then sorry, you have no headroom. You won't go any higher.

I've just decided to not mess with it. These two cards are running everything I want just fine, and I don't want to be playing a game and then have it just freeze on me. Thanks for all your guys' input.

Afterburner has an option that allows you to unlock voltage control and monitoring. I've had the same problems overclocking my N660's SLI to anything above +40 core clock. Usually my drivers will say they've stopped responding and recovered. Thus far the only stable overclock I've attained with a 750W PSU is +40 Core clock, +273 Memory Clock, with no power adjustments.

I'm running 2x 660 TF in SLI and I have to UNDERclock them by 20 mhz on both memory and GPU + put power to 119% and overvolt them at 62,5 mV to get them to not crash every minute.


In all honesty I'm massively annoyed with this card and it's SLI performance. It's just as instable as it gets.
I didn't buy 2 of these just to have to underclock them etc.. but yeah there you have it.

I used to have a GTX 660 SLI setup, even the same two MSI cards you have. They really don't overclock well at all. My stint with them I think the best I ever achieved was +40MHz Core Clock, and maybe +235MHz on memory.

hmmm yeah... well I don't even need any OC.. just want to run them at the factory settings. :(

having said that.. with the adjustments I made I can pretty much run any current FPS game at it's highest settings or close enough without much trouble.
