I have a home network with two types of network "server" storage. There is a NAS and then I also have a flash drive on one of the USB ports of my router. (The router is for faster access for DNLA streaming, and the NAS is for backups).

Anyway, whenever I try to set up a password to restrict access to either of the drives, I can't seem to connect in Windows (any version from XP, WIn7 or Win8) due to incorrect credentialing.

If, for example, I set up the SSD to require credentials using the router setup panels, giving access to uid: JohnSmith, pw: temp, then I go to map the drive in XP / Win 7 / Win 8, it will prompt me for a user and pw. I type in JohnSmith and temp, but it returns a message saying that \\MY_DESKTOP\JohnSmith access denied (where "MY_DESKTOP" is the name of the machine I am trying to map the drive from).

I have the same kind of problem with the NAS. The only way I can get to my network storage is to make them public shares, and then I have no problem mapping them as network drives.

I don't have a domain login server or anything like that. I'm not even sure I have all the computers on a domain - I think it's something called a "Home Network" in Win 7 parlance. Like I said, this is a home network built from machines that all came separately preloaded with various OEM Windows versions.

Anyone know how to set up limited user access / properly log in with this situation? Thanks in advance.

Still have the problem, but as an aside, I was dealing with a similar issue trying to scan from a network scanner to a protected network resource on a Windows PC. I was able to include the domain in the credentials the scanner was using (as in, \\DESKTOP\user1) and it worked. Problem is I don't know what domain the router has for its user credentials (I may not even be using "domain" correctly here).

The router is a Western Digital WD MyNet N900 recognized as "MyNet900" in Windows Network Neighborhood. The NAS is a Zyxel NSA325 recognized as "NSA325".
