Smoke smell when near PC

Hi. This is a new system I bought pre built months ago due to waiting too long for individual components to get here.

I don't have enough space on my desk so I put my PC on the floor, on a stand. The stand is around 3 inches high and I'm thinking that isn't enough.

Lately after using if I get extremely close to it I can smell smoke. If I do something intensive, I can smell it 3 feet away. CoreTemp and CCC shows CPU and GPU temps are fine (fantastic actually). I don't feel much in the back so I'm guessing it's not the PSU. Haven't noticed any slow down until recently when I was playing Skyrim the PC's fans got loud and the game got slow and had some minor graphical anomalies. Again, GPU and CPU temperatures are fantastic. I have also noticed that I cannot access the BIOS as the system just freezes.

Is it a wire? Or is it dirty and I just need to open it and clean it?

Specs:

i5 3470 3.2GHz
HD 7850 Twin Frozr III
8 GB of HyperX RAM
Gigabyte H77 mobo
PSU Corsair 600W

Thank you if you took the time to read.

Open your case and take a good look at all the wiring and the motherboard. Look for evidence of overheating wires (melted insulation or discoloration) and/or discoloration or swollen capacitors on your motherboards. Also, run it with the case open and see if you can see smoke coming from anywhere or try and discern where the smell is most pronounced (motherboard, PSU, etc.)

Pretty much all you can do is follow this advice here. So do what he said and see what happens. I am only posting this to agree with the above commenter.

Thank you. I will open it as soon as I can. Also, it'd be greatly appreciated if someone could give me advice about the BIOS freezing. Could these two things be connected?

can you explain a little more about what you mean by "BIOS freezing"? Is it UEFI graphical where you use your mouse to navigate or the olf-fashioned type where you navigate using your keyboard? (Sorry, I'm not familiar with Gigabyte mobos)

I get the Gigabyte splash screen (which recently was really dark and not readable), I get to the BIOS and I can't do anything. I tried entering it a few months ago so it's a little fuzzy but I think it's the new mouse navigation.

Opening my PC today. Hoping it's just a wire.
