Speeding up a old laptop.

so a family member let me put windows 8 on it in hopes of speeding up the quite old pc about 2005 i believe, any way its got a intel celeron m 430 and 512mb ram and now windows 8 what could i do to speed it up and any good deals on laptop ram or etc. ty for any help

Swap out the hard drive for a ssd. You will be amazed at the difference.

Laptop 5400 rpm drives are installed for battery savings. They are abysmally slow.
Your 2005 laptop is new enough to have a sata 2.5" drive installed.
Use google to find instructions on how to do the swap for your particular laptop.
Most likely either a 7mm or 9.5mm ssd will be ok.

Goodness! 512mb!.... definitely upgrade the ram. 4gb should not be a problem. I would do that first.
Get compatible ram, check a ram vendor's upgrade configurator. No need to spend more on fast ram.

if the machine goes back to 2005, 512 was king back then. so yes, make sure you can even add more.
