poor preformance laptop gaming

Hello friends! I'm stuck using my laptop for gaming right now and I just can't get a steady performance out of it. I've set everything to very low but suffer major fps drops regularly. I'm playing on a:

Brand - Lenovo IdeaPad Y570
CPU - Intel Core i5-2410M 2.30GHz
Memory - 4GB DDR3
Graphics Card - NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M
Video Memory - 1GB Dedicated DDR5 VRAM

I understand this computer also comes equip with Nvidia optimus. The thing is, I have no idea how to optimize to get a decent performance! If anyone has some suggestions for getting at a better performance out of my laptop, please leave a comment. Thanks

P.S. The game I'm primarily playing on this laptop is League of Legends, in case that gives you a more focused idea for solving the problem.

My guess is that your gt 555 isnt actually activating and your computer is using the intel integrated gpu. I had that happen to me with my laptop once before, with league of legends I think actually. You'll have to try changing the graphics processor setting for league of legends in the nvidia control panel and see if that helps. If not, it could be a software/driver issue maybe. Also, what do your laptop temperatures look like while playing? I've seen laptops that get pretty toasty, which could possibly explain your issue as well.

Thanks vedeyn; my temps are pretty nuts when just idling, so I'm going to try getting a nice cooling pad and see if that helps. Will take a few days so if anyone still has some tips I'd be grateful.
