I pulled an hdd out of an old computer, formatted it, and have been using it as external storage with no issues for a few months (via a rosewill ide to usb adapter), but while dusting I saw that my mobo actually has one ide slot. Excited, I plugged the hdd in with the jumper and ribbon set to master configuration (leaving the jumper out entirely resulted in the disc not being recognized at all), and booted up windows. BIOS showed the drive, and continuing into windows proper the device manager showed it as well, but it was not showing up in windows explorer.
After a bit of searching I learned I needed to initialize it through the computer management/disk management screens, and this is where I am having a problem. The drive shows up (though the readout of it's size is incorrect) and the initialize wizard pops up as it is supposed to, but after clicking OK I get the spinning cursor for all of one second, and then nothing. No error message, but the drive still shows as uninitialized and I cannot format it.
After a few hours of google scrounging, I can't seem to find another thread with this problem, so any help is very, -very- appreciated.
I am running windows 7 64bit, and the hdd in question is a WD800 Cavier. thank you in advance.
