Why can't I stream films to my TV via my laptop

I have an ASUS X5DIJ laptop which has VGA port and have connected it to Sony Bravia TV DMI port using cable and a converter. I can get my PC's desktop to appear on TV but not any films I am trying to stream over the internet Interestingly, I can get the sound from the film playing on my PC on the TV but no image.

Any suggestions I'm just going round in circles.

Thank you or your reply. However, problem is now solved. Every web site and video I looked at said to connect to the HDMI port on back of TV. Just to see what would happen, I connected my laptop to the PC port on the back of the TV using same HDMI cable but without the converter. Then, as you kindly suggested, dragged the title bar over to TV. Works perfectly, Brilliant!!
