BIOS freezes at splash and does not respond to keyboard or BIOS update, seemingly after installing chipset driver.

Hey guys. I bought a new ext HDD (hold on, the mobo comes in later). It worked via USB 3.0 fine through Linux, but naturally not on Win, so I got USB drivers for the mobo from the manufacturer. That did nothing, so I uninstalled them to start over. The drive was then inaccessible on either OS via any USB port, whether 2.0 or 3.0. (I realise Win drivers would not affect Linux. I think I'm misunderstanding something here.) I installed chipset drivers (flagged in Device Manager so I thought I'd give it a try), but after rebooting, the machine freezes as soon as the manufacturer's image is displayed.

I of course rebooted a couple of times in case it was a fluke, as has happened to me before. I then unplugged everything except the keyboard and DVI, but still nothing. The mobo beeps once as usual. Pressing Del (BIOS menu for my board) doesn't work, and neither do Ctrl or Del (which I've read work as a quick BIOS reset for Asus and other boards).

The RAM check light was on, so I removed the sticks, dusted the slots, re-placed them, then hit the MemOK button - that sorted itself out. After that, the boot device check light was on! Both internal HDDs hadn't been touched. To see if I could get into the BIOS without any boot device, I unplugged the data cables for the BR drive and both HDDs, but still no dice.

Next step was to download the BIOS update and put it on a flash drive; the mobo supports Flashback (automatically update direct from USB), so I put it in the relevant USB 3.0 slot at the back and held down the button for it... nothing. Renaming the file (which was in the root of the drive, which had been formatted) to SABERZ77.ROM (from SABERTOOTH-Z77-ASUS-1908.CAP, as downloaded), as recommended in one of Asus' support articles, didn't work either. This is the case for other USB slots, which I tried anyway, even if they don't support Flashback.

I did do some research (including here), but the only other thing I could find was to remove the battery/reset the CMOS, but the mobo has the "thermal armor" so I'd rather not remove everything looking for it if I could avoid doing so. This is not a new build; the machine was working fine for six months since I upgraded.

Finally, I've put in the W7 install disc and the mobo's chipset CD (which it can apparently boot from), in case the BR drive (was first in load order) might still do something, but you can guess the result of that. Before I formatted the USB drive, it had a Mint live CD on it, which also did nothing. I've contacted both Seagate re: HDD and Asus re: mobo, but would like to get this sorted ASAP so came here too.

Sorry for the wall of text, and thanks in advance.

Asus SABERTOOTH Z77
Intel Core i7-3770K 4x 3.5GHz
Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8) 1600MHz CL10 DDR3
NVIDIA GTX 670
WD 2TB HDD (Windows 7 x64) + 500GB generic (Mint x64 part. with GRUB)

(If it's relevant, the new external is a 2TB Seagate STBV2000200. I just hooked it up to this spare machine, and it doesn't show, not even in Disk Management. I digress...)

I've since tried clearing the CMOS by moving the jumper, which didn't seem to do anything. I eventually got the BIOS to update by disconnecting both hard drives, which fixed the freeze and allowed me to access a menu at long last. I then found out, by connecting one at a time, that it was the newer (!) 2TB internal that was causing the boot device LED to be on. Changing the SATA cable didn't work, so I'm wondering if it's completely kaput. I suppose things could be worse - the drive's still under warranty.

The cable hadn't been moved ports since the OS was installed, but I did try switching ports and using a different cable. Anyway, I just sent the drive off to WD to get replaced - thankfully most of my data was on my secondary.
