recently I upgraded my cpu from core2duo e6600 2.4ghz to e8500 3.16ghz , but instead of getting higher fps , i noticed a slight fps drop.
I did several test with tomb raider benchmark on high quality , with the e6600 it goes around 38 fps average, but with the e8500 it goes around 33 average, I know its just a slight drop but I'm curious why the FPS drop instead of getting higher ?
maybe its bottleneck problem or something?
the cpu temperature is pretty good , around 45C full and 35C idle, so i don't thinks its a temperature problem

my specs :
PSU : Vantec ion2+ 500w
Motherboard : Asrock Wolfdale1333-D667 R2.0
( http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Wolfdale1333-D667%20R2.0/ )
CPU : Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16Ghz
RAM : 2 x 2gb DDR2 PC6400
Graphic card : HIS HD 4670 IceQ 1GB (128bit) DDR3

i'm sorry if my english is pretty bad

No problem :).
As to your issue, you are having a gpu bottleneck (100% utilization of GPU and less than 100% utilization of the CPU) which is ideally what you aim for in a gaming build. From what you are observing, it does seem that you are hitting the limit to which you can push your GPU and you will benefit from a GPU upgrade.

Also I missed out on answering your question on Windows 7. If your motherboard can only support a maximum 4 GB of ram then it is okay to go for a 32 bit version. You can use the same license key on a 64 bit version but in that case you must erase your 32 bit installation and you must stick with the same system.

Windows 7: One license, one installation, one machine. You can use either a 32 bit or a 64 bit...

No bottleneck here from what I can tell. In regards to temperature, CPU temp programs are not always perfect. I would recommend first checking for driver updates for your GPU and if that does not fix anything, reapply the thermal paste to your CPU.

Da heck? I just upgraded to an E6600 btw xD. The wolfdale core 2 duos are supposed to run even better. Perhaps re-installing windows might do the trick? Also when you installed the new processor did you apply fresh thermal paste to it? If not then that might be a problem. It might be overheating.. Before i had the E6600 i was running a e2160 then i installed the e6600 without thermal paste and i was getting low scores too. Then i applied the fresh paste the next day and temps went down! My cpu index jumped from 4.3 to 5.8 in m computer properties

i'm using arctic cooling mx-3 thermal paste that i bought 2 years ago  , but i've tried several temperature monitoring software and the cpu temperature seems pretty good to me, around 35C idle , and around 45C full , i'm using cooler master tx3 evo cpu cooler.

currently using xp 32bit for now, but i bought win7 32bit yesterday and planning for an upgrade , did I make a wrong choice to buy the 32bit version of win7 ? because what I think is my motherboard only support maximum ram of 4gb , and even the actual memory size are 3.12gb 'due to chipset limitation and reservation for windows' they said on the website , so why go for the 64bit i think.

Janggo. Do not do that as it is against Forum rules.

You are right in saying that you should get a rise in FPS but that only happens when you are originally bottlenecked.
That means if the 6600 was unable to drive the 4670 to it's potential, only then would migrating to a higher clocked cpu would bring out a difference.

As an example, a core i7 2600K and 3770K running at the same clock speed would likely give similar~almost equal FPS running a game with a 6850(a card each of these cpus can feed with absolute ease).

Try the benching at ultra settings and see again how the cpus perform.

oh I didn't know that, I'm truly sorry :(
anyway, i ran the tomb raider benchmark again on maxed setting , the fps seems the same compared to the high setting, around 33 fps
so maybe i have to upgrade the graphic card to something more ?

so you were saying that i'll benefit from a gpu upgrade, correct? sorry i don't understand that much about this bottleneck things, then what graphic card would you recommend based on my spec :)

I think you can go till an HD 7850 or a GTX 650ti before you will see your card under-performing due to lack of cpu power. Remember that you have a pcie x16 1.0 slot. So that will be the limit of the maximum bandwidth of your card. A good idea will be to take a mid range card from the HD 6xxx series from AMD or 4xx/5xx series from nvidia.

Take a card from either 8th, 9th or 10th level of the chart below
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107-7.html

You choice of card may require power from the psu so make sure you have molex to pcie power connector.

good luck

i think i'll go with 7770 , because of less power consumption
thank you so much, you're helping me a lot :wahoo:
