File Explorer Hangs Requiring Reboot

For some reason, my file explorer will not work after a random number of time/sleep cycles on my system. You open file explorer, and click on desktop, downloads, c:\ links, (on the left side panel), and nothing will load. The green progress bar at the top will slowly progress to the right, but my files will not appear. If I click on too many links, the entire file explorer will go gray and say not responding. If I close it, all the programs on my desktop will usually disappear. The only thing that will fix this is a reboot, when everything works as it should.

I have my OS and some programs on an SSD. Everything else (desktop, downloads, documents, most programs) is on a 500 GB HDD. I can open programs stored on the HDD while file explorer is not responding, and programs and files already open work fine, so I know the HDD is good. The only problem is that file explorer stops working at random, and stays broken until I reboot.

My Windows services aren't split up. Everything that has to do with Windows (other than my Desktop, Documents, and Download folders) is on my 120 GB SSD. I read and write to these folders a ton and don't want to use up the SSD rewrites faster than I need to. I also have some commonly used programs on my SSD like Microsoft Office and iTunes. I know a couple people who use a setup like this without incident (Desktop and other document folders on a large HDD and OS and important files on SSD).

Everything else on my computer runs near flawlessly (as flawless as you can get with Windows 8)... Which is why I don't understand the problems with File Explorer I seem to be having at random. Could just be a Windows 8 bug or a failing HDD, but as programs will run off of the HDD while this is happening, I don't think so.

I did read on one site that installing Intel Rapid Storage Technology helped a similar problem someone else was having. I have installed this service today, and will see if it helps. As the problem happens seeming randomly at the moment, I may not know for sure for some time.
