CPU getting hot while running BF3 (80c)

I got an i3 2120 and for some reason while bf3 is running it will sometimes reach a high of 80c but its usually in the 70s. It runs at 36c idle and when playing other games it never goes close to 80c like when playing bf3.

Are these temps considered bad? and what can I do to fix this.

Oh and my graphics card runs like max 50c while playing bf3 and like 34 c while idle.

Bf3 is an intensive game, it could be that you need to re-seat your heatsink and reapply thermal compound, clean off the old stuff and place a small rice grain amount on the middle of the processor horizontally (with direction the writing is printed).

36 is quite high for an idle temperature. mine rarely goes above 24 on desktop maybe 26 with a video running.

your idle temps should be within 5-6C of your ambient temps. If your ambient is much lower than 36 (say you have air conditioning on), then Mauller is right in saying that even your idle temp is high. For most games including crysis 2 that I have played on my system, I never see 70+ C. I see that high a temp only with F@H.

It will be a good Idea to check the heat sink mount and insure it's not loosely held. If the mount is strong enough, first blow out dust from it (if there's a chance of it). Dismount-remount the heat sink if necessary.

Ok thanks, Ill try that. I got core temp to keep an eye on the temps and it says Tj max 102c, does that mean thats the highest it can go without breaking?

yes. Tj Max is the maximum temperature that your cores can get to before the silicon degenerates. Core temps are the most important temps to look out for. For the second generation Core i cpus, as a general rule of thumb, you can consider 75C to be the optimum full load temp for prolonged operation. At this temp with a stock cooler and default clocks, you can assume that your cpu will last it's life cycle (likely outlive it) while crunching away numbers constantly.
