Hi all, Im currently using the ConRoe945G-DVI motherboard details here http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/ConRoe945G-DVI/ and im looking to add some memory. I'm currently running two Team Group Inc DDR2-SDRAM PC2-5300 (333MHz) 1024MB sticks. Now i know i can add 4gb worth but the motherboard site says only 3gb will be recognised so i want to buy another 1gb stick just to give me a little boost in performance.
Now the question, Because the manufacturer of my memory is hard to come by on ebay is it ok to just add a different manufacturers DDR2 667mhz 1024 mb stick in my rig? I've done a lot of searching and people are giving lots of different answers and i was hoping someone hear could help.
Well, it's true that 32bit version of windows will recognize a memory only upto 3GB or 3.5GB depending on the hardware installed. What happens is that some of the addressable memory (regardless of how much you have physically installed) is reserved for use by page files or by some of the devices that you are using, such as a graphics card, PCI card, integrated network connections, etc., so it's unavailable for use as normal main memory.
I would suggest you to go with anothertwo 1GB modules instead of one 1GB module. Alright, coming to your second question that is regarding mixing different brands. Well, theoretically any DDR2 PC2-5300 DIMM memory should work fine. Brands does not matter as long as the memory meets the specification.
However, in the hindsight you must know there are chances for generic memory to be incompatible with branded memory. A BIOS upgrade sometimes will be able to fix this. But hey its better to try rather than worrying, I can assure that there will not be any harm done to your Motherboard.
