Hello :-)

I got a PC recently with Windows 8. The only backup feature I could find was the one saving my personal files, but no programs f.e. On my Mac, I use Time Machine, so when I have to replace my hard drive or get a new Mac, I can just recover all my programs and personal files without overwriting the drivers of the new Mac. So my ideal backup software would work like this:
- Backup of all my programs
- Backup of all my settings (programm settings as well)
- Optional backup of my personal files
- No backup of my drivers

This way, I could just load my files and programs to the system when I replace certain parts of the computer - or if my hard drive fails.

I was wondering, if Windows 8 has this feature already ... hidden somewhere ;-). Or if there is any backup programm out there that can do this?

In Windows 7 you go to the action center and there is a back up feature there so if Windows 8 kept the same feature you can try the same place , just go to the action center and under maintenance you should see the back up feature.

just type in the search box, windows 7 file recovery. that will allow you yo do the complete system image like in windows 7. And be sure you also make the recovery disk. you will need that to start the process.

Look at ToDo Backup Free, I use it to image the system... and GoodSync or SyncBack to maintain Files. This is not as "elegant" as Time Machine. It is Free.

Windows Backup can do whole system and incremental as well. Personally, I like the ability to "Cherry Pick" files from the Backup in GoodSync and not have them wrapped up in a compressed file.

I resell a Cloud Backup Solution that does unlimited versioning of files, which is awesome, just not free.

I do not need to backup my personal files with versioning like with Time Machine. I would like to have a backup software with witch I can restore all my programs without restoring the drivers. Is the Windows 7 backup solution capable of this, or any other backup tool?

ToDoBackup will image the whole system to an external or network drive, from there you create a bootable utility disk (with ToDo Backup) to restore to the same or a new drive and start from the last image point.

I've had to do it a couple of times from hung/failed windows updates and such. After restoring the image, copy back the latest of the files you are missing from your data backup.

David, I also just bought a laptop with windows 8 and, unfortunately, windows is only able to restore the operating system (and now has the feature to recover files for programs) but doesn't restore the actual programs which would have to be re-installed if your hard drive had to be formatted or crashed. I installed the free version of VMware (VM Player) on my new pc laptop and run a virtual OS X Mountain Lion machine and it works great. But I have a compatible intel processor on the laptop. I have an iMac, macbook pro and older mac desktop. I also have owned many pcs and still have one running xp, another running Windows 7 ultimate and now the new laptop with 8. Windows is not even in the same league as MAC on so many levels including the backup.
