I am having an issue with Mafia 1 (not Mafia 2).

(1) The car shadows flicker like crazy. It can get distracting. I use the most up-to-date drivers. There is other flickering going on too, not just the cars. But the car shadows flicker the most.

Here are the settings for the game:

I tried messing with the settings, but no luck.

This is the only game I have experienced this issue with.

(2) Maybe someone can help me out. I do not even know what some of these settings do (Hardware TransformLighting, Multipass Rendering, Clip Always, Disable EAX, Software Mixing Only, Suspend When Inactive). This game might be too old for me to understand its video settings. I tried messing with them, but I notice no difference. But I thought maybe some of them could help with the flickering issue.

(3) Also, is there anyway to zoom the camera view out on foot? I would like to have a camera view similar to the Grand Theft Auto games, where I can see all of my character's body. In Mafia, I only see the chest up. It's too close for my taste.

Solution
This is a common problem with old games. You may be able to lower the shadow quality or shut them right off.

Hardware T&L is a feature that is on ALL cards now.
Suspend when inactive should pause the game when you minimize it.
Clipping in most games lets you walk through walls, not sure about this game.
EAX is a dead hardware acceleration option from Creative(While it still works with many cards, you need an extra software to make it work right).
Software mixing is for sound card compatibility. Almost all sound is software mixed on modern operating systems anyway.
Multi pass may or may not be a AA option :)

Thanks!

What settings do you think I should check for best quality? The game will not let me choose Hardware T&L and Multi pass at the same time. It has to be one or the other.

Are you getting lines /angles /polygons /planes all over the place? Because that is a issue with mafia 1 and Windows vista/7.Found this on the steam forums-Clicking on expert settings, then changing 'hardware T&L' to 'multipass rendering' fixes the issue. All credit goes to the steam forums.Hope this helps. :)

Yes, I get those. Slightly in other areas, but 95% of those occur on the car shadows.

I tried that solution, but unfortunately, it did not work. :( Do you have the thread?

I guess I just have to accept that their shadow rendering methods is not perfectly supported by newer computers.

This is the same thread I looked up but it does not offer any more solutions other than the one I already wrote, sorry for that. You could try running as administrator and changing the compatibility settings to windows vista.Just don't give up . :)
If all else fails, you could try emailing the game's developers or the official distributor of the game in your region. :)

Thanks for the help. I tried all those solutions. No luck, but it looks like it minimized the problem. That was some useful information.

The problem seems to occur only on certain parts of the map and when the sun is facing a certain way during the day. I was doing a racing mission and all the shadows were fine during the day. Just the way it is I guess. No big deal.

I just want to knock this game out so I can move on to Mafia 2. :)
