I already have the case and a 700watt PSU. I currently have a standard crap MOBO with an a8-5600k/7850 OC, and 8gb ram, but I'll be upgrading near the end of summer to compete with the upcoming consoles.

Solution

Yes he was incorrect.

CF is overrated. Stick with the HD7970 until it can't do what you want it to do, sell it, and grab a newer card which can.

I agree with Zero_ wait a few weeks for Haswell, and since you said you'd be building near the end of summer you'll also be able to take advantage of some of the back to school sales that etailers like Newegg have going on at that time. You'll also have reviews and benchmarks to use to help pick parts.

Corsair GS700 only 80% efficiently, pure output only 560W more less.. Your VGA 7850 consume 150-175W, if you crosfire, theoritically from web amd : http://www.amd.com/US/PRODUCTS/DESKTOP/GRAPHICS/7000/7850/Pages/radeon-7850.aspx#2, recommend minimum 600w & 8gb ram.. to avoid bottleneck, you shall upgrade your psu to minimum 800W 80+ pure bronze certified psu or greater ( mine using Corsair HX850W, 90% efficiency with 2 SLI Msi GTX660Ti Power Edition/OC, each use 150W)

I'm not real sure what is being said about the PSU, but I'm assuming from the comments that his statement was incorrect! The new Haswell seems to be the way to go and that mobo looks amazing. So those and say the 7970? I looked up crossfiring and a lot of people were concerned about micostuttering.
