I've dell studio 1550 with 3gb ddr2 ram, 2 slots. Am trying to upgrade ram, but dell technical support told that system is configured to work best with present ram. Is there any sense in that advice or should I proceed with upgrading ram.
though DDR2 4gb ram is quite expensive, but better than buying a new system ;)

Well, that's true!! The memory price of DDR2 is slightly higher when compared to DDR3. If you are convinced that you need the memory regardless of the price then here is the link for the same. Dell Studio 1555 - Memory

Hello aditya,

I believe your laptop's correct model name is Dell Vostro 1550, if that's not true then you can confirm the same using the Dell service tag number (how to locate the service tag?) You can confirm the model using the below link - http://www.dell.com/support/Manuals/in/en/indhs1/ShowProductSelector

If your laptop's model number is Vostro 1550 - then the good news is that your laptop's memory can be upgraded.:bounce: As one of the post quotes above saying that memory upgrade doesn't do much to older models like yours, is 'not True'. A memory upgrade will increase the overall performance for newer models as well as the older models but the performance may differ with systems. More often when the system is not performing upto the mark the user expects it to work, all they do to contemplate on buyin a newer system; maybe a new system is good but you would be astonished what a memory upgrade can do to your system.

It all depends on the applications you use and the intensity of your work. If you use your system for basic browsing and do not use much applications or use it for many hours then even if you upgrade the memory to the max you will not notice much difference in performance.

Compatible memory upgrade for Dell Vostro 1550

Good luck with the upgrade. Cheers :)
