hello,

My laptop is going quite slow (Intel Core 2.2GHz, T6600; 4GB RAM).
I use Matlab, Mathcad, SolidWorks, ArcGIS and I need a better performance - on a usual usage it takes more than 50% of the memory.

What should I upgrade? any ideas?

What is the type of the processor? you should probably update the whole laptop though, but you can upgrade the memory just check if your current configuration allows it (e.g does it have 1 stick of 4gb or 2x2gb, windows 32-bit or 64-bit). what type of ram is it? if it's DDR2 it's not worth the upgrade imo, that's quite expensive these days.

It's DDR3, but doesn't support more then 4GB.

All I know about processor is this: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6600 @2.20GHz.
It is Windows 64-bit - Don't know how much memory accepts (I don't know where to check). But it seems like doesn't accept more than 4GB, as you said.

Thanks for your answer!

Thanks for your answer Yeah seems like a new laptop is needed. Just wanted to check if there is no other way to improve this one, before buying another one.

Cheers!

Hello Powpawell,

Upgrading RAM is the best way to increase performance.

Since, you use your laptop for CAD and the other software's, anything between 6GB - 8GB of memory would be better but if you are into hardcore CAD designing, multimedia editing and stuffs then probably 16GB or higher will be better for you. But provided all these I think your processor is kinda on the slower side and bit sluggish.

Btw, your laptop (Gateway NV78 series) support a max memory of 8GB.

Conclusion: If you are not looking for another laptop just want to get the most of this laptop then upgrading your laptop's memory is the ideal choice. You can find the memory for this laptop here. But I think you would be better off with a newer laptop which supports a minimum of 16GB with the latest Intel Core processors, probably a mobile workstation!

Hope everything works according to plan. Cheers!

Legohouse, I am also trying to find out if I can upgrade my NV7802U Laptop. As you are the only one anywhere online who has stated I can bump the RAM to 8gb (2x4gb) where did you come up with this information? Thanks in advance.
