Searching for a quiet keyboard for gaming

Does anybody out there have a suggestion for a relatively cheap keyboard that's pretty quiet?

The keyboard will be used primarily for online gaming, and I'm tired of annoying people with my excessively loud keyboard! I also want something much quieter for recording videos.

I'm on a budget here, so I'm looking for something under $40 if at all possible. I'd slightly prefer a wired mouse to a wireless one, but beggars can't be choosers.

I live in an absolutely tiny town that doesn't have any electronics stores for miles, so it's a bit difficult for me make a two hour roundtrip to the nearest city just to try some keyboards out. I wish I could!

Thanks in advance to anybody who thinks of a suggestion for me, guys.

any membrane/rubber dome switch soft-touch keyboard with half height keys should be rather quiet.

logitech makes a few they call quiet-touch.

none of them are silent though.

there is only one which is truly silent and that is the roll up gummy feeling keyboards but they are horrible to type on so i wouldnt recommend them.

Thanks for all the information, man. I didn't even know the half-height keys were quieter, so that's great information. I'll definitely check out the Logitech quiet-touch line and look for the features you mentioned. I wasn't sure which terminology to look for without help, so this really helps me out. :)

(As you said, I'll pass on the gummy keyboard unless I need to fly with one in my luggage; that sounds like all they would be good for! Perfect silence is not worth the misery of typing on something unresponsive or awkward.)

i'm using a mechanical cherry switch right now and its loud but i do miss my model m.

it was much louder and i loved every minute of it.

i am not sure the half height keys are quieter by design per se but they do often get paired up with a lighter resistance mechanism which requires less force to activate hence there is less noise when you bottom out. if you pressed the keys without bottoming out which can be rather hard to do they would sound almost exactly this same and almost dead silent.

remember though that not every keyboard labeled quiet, silent or quiet-touch is actually quiet. in my experience though going with any logitech brand half height membrane keyboard is typically going to be rather quiet. i always suggest going to the store to see them if possible though.

i've tried typing on the gummy keyboards before. imagine for a minute you have a 1/4 inch thick sheet of jello in the size and shape of a keyboard with 1/4 inch thick key shapes on top. imagine that each key shape had a cherry pit in them. now imagine typing on it. that gives a good idea of what they are like.
