Hello guys,

I'm into upgrading my current desktop, especially RAM. I need 16GB ram size for audio and working with large virtual instrument libraries. I'm not into OC and stuff, I just need 16GB of RAM.

I'm really frustrated with compatibilities within MOBO and CPU. The problem is that i can't check compatibility into Gigabyte's site, since they have lists up to 2GB modules...

My current setup is:

MoBo: GA-EX58-UD3R (rev.1.0)
CPU: Intel Core i7-920 @ 2.66 GHz
My current RAM is: OCZ Gold Low-Voltage 3GB DDR3-1600 Ram Kit (PC3-12800, 8-8-8-24, Triple Channel, OC (yes, they seemingly work!)

Above ram sticks work @1.65V. This means that my mobo is overclocked by manufacturer/builder?

Cpu (920) supports ram speed up to 1066mHz. Should I choose strictly 1033mHz? Usually 1333mHz is cheaper; is it gonna operate automatically (downgrade) to 1033mHz?

The only compatible ram i found is this via crucial's memory advisor tool. Any chance to get 16GB on my system cheaper than 170€? :??: :??:

Thanks a lot in advance

Those Kingston sticks are the cheapest I can find... Plus they are CL7 (which means they are "fast" - right?)

@cin19

OC seems so difficult to me. So many parametres to tweak - causes me lots of confusion :pt1cable:

thanks. Are they compatible with my MoBo's chipset?

North Bridge: Intel® X58 Express Chipset
South Bridge: Intel® ICH10R

I'm no expert, but I do own a GA-EX58-UD3R. You cannot have 16GB in triple channel on this MB.

When it comes to double v. triple channels, your 2 options are:
-4x4GB (16GB) in dual channel
-3x4GB (12GB) in triple channel

If you need/want 16GB, then dual channel is the only option.

Do you have any reason why you say "You cannot have 16GB in triple channel on this MB"?

Here is from intel:
"Triple-channel mode is enabled when identical matched memory modules are installed in each of the three blue memory slots.
If only two of the blue memory slots are populated with matched DIMMs, dual-channel mode is enabled."

Because triple channel requires 3 RAM slots and 16 is not divisible by 3 (and this MB only has 4 RAM slots).

Thanks for the information. I won a 8 gig dual channel set at a LAN party and was concerned about just putting 2 sticks into my triple channel rig.
Looks like i'll be upgrading my 6 gigs (2 gig x 3 sticks) to 8 gigs (4 gig x 2 sticks) tonight when i get home! thanks for the info!
