DDR3 1600 PC3 12800 verse DDR3 1600

I was looking at some corsair vengeance 2x8gb memory and saw one was DDR3 1600 and the other DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800). The one with PC3 12800 was a couple bucks cheaper than the one without, so what's the difference?

Also, it mentioned both were unbuffered which I've read is better for gaming. Is this true?

DDR3 1600 is pretty much the same in a generic sense. What could vary are the specific latencies/timings of the particular models you are comparing.

Post the links for the models you are considering and we can provide a more informed recommendation/answer.

generally speaking they should not have any major differences as they depict the same specifications. But still there might be some differences as COLGeek said as to their specific latencies, voltages but that we can only tell you once you give us the links to those items.

Hmmm, it turns out that one of the sites I check just didn't show some of the information. I looked at another link and they both show DDR3 1600 PC3 12800

Unbuffered memory is what is used in desktop systems (and most laptops/notebooks as well) and is faster for gaming/general purpose computing. Buffered/ECC/etc memory is used in servers and workstations that value data precision over raw speed.

BTW, that memory is identical exact for the color of the heat spreaders.
