Hello folks,

I have a serious issue with my USB ports. My mouse has stopped working recently, it's lights will sometimes flash as if it doesn't get enough power, and after a while it will stop working completely. At first I thought there was a problem with the drivers for the mouse (I use a Cyborg Gaming R.A.T. 5 mouse), but after trying some other mice I had lying around, it turns out none of them work either.

I regularly get a pop-up message saying that there's an 'Unkown USB Device' connected to my laptop, even when I have no USB devices whatsoever plugged into either of the 2 USB ports.

So far I have removed the drivers for any 'hidden' USB devices that were grayed out after enabling 'Show hidden devices' in the Device Manager. I have also turned my laptop off, disconnected it from power and took the battery out, then held the Power button pressed for 30 seconds. According to this link that may fix the issue: http://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutorials/3906-usb-driver-reset-usb-ports-power-state-reset.html

Needless to say, the problem still persisted, and now I've tried this site hoping someone can help me fix this issue.

I will be monitoring this thread for the coming days, please let me know if you have any suggestions. If you need more information about my system and/or settings, please ask and I will do my best to provide you the information you need.

Kind regards,

Tim

easy way to tell if it's the port, mouse, or windows. Download Ubuntu live CD and burnt it to a disk, or even easier, make a bootable USB stick and boot it. If the mouse works fine in there and doesn't crap out, then it's a Windows thing. If it still craps out in Ubuntu, then it's probably a hardware thing.
