GW2 lags to unplayable level when at WvW (world vs world) when there are lots and lots of people. I have been playing it using lowest ever possible settings at 1980 resolution. The game plays fine outside WvW (except when fighting world boss which lags but is still playable).

My spec:
intel i3 530
radeon hd 5770
8gb ram

If I buy radeon hd 7950, will it eliminate all lags in WvW or should I upgrade CPU first?

Thanks.

Personally, I think its your CPU holding back. Generally speaking, WvW and Boss fights in MMORPG are large calculations of a lot of subjects around (players in PVP, mobs in PVE) which is CPU dependent.

A way to test is would be to lower the resolution to something very low like 1280x720 or 1366x768. If your FPS increases then that means your GPU is too weak, as decreasing the resolution "increases" the load on the CPU and decreases the load on the GPU as the graphics is less complex so the GPU completes it "shift" of work faster than the CPU. So technically speaking, your GPU received a boost in power in a way.

If your FPS increases, if means your CPU is fine at the work as your can see that its not blocking the increase in power.

If your FPS stays the same or even decreases, it means your CPU is blocking the increase in GPU power as the graphics has become less complex but the GPU still has to wait for your CPU to complete the "shift" of work first.

But as said, if it only occurs in settings of large player counts its mainly the CPU. But not always.

Have a look at this, Toms done an article on GW2 performance. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/guild-wars-2-performance-benchmark,3268-6.html

Looks like you may have to upgrade both as 1920x1080 is quite a high resolution in the first place.

Well first have you adjusted the WvW charactor models to see if that helps at all ?They added a WvW option so you can load default models instead of the normal models. You should be able to tell if you have that option on as the enemy realm will all be be same color (blue/purple etc). You should first try adjusting those setting and see what the results are, if you find they help improve the lag then upgrading your video card will help.

The next issue with GW2 is still lag this has nothing to do with your PC but how much/how fast the server can handle and proces all the information. There is nothing you can do about this, I'm running 7870xt in xfire and when we get in 50+vs 50+ (normally on hills/garr/bay inner wall) I see 1-3 second skill delay.

@ikaz
Yes I lowered it all the way to lowest and now the WvW models are default models which look like crap. With that settings, it's playable but I would like more.

The issue with internet latency is there but it's not my concern (or of this thread).
Thanks!

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out.

Ok then if you do lower the models and you find improvement then a GPU/CPU upgrade would help. If you have $300 to spend then try and split the difference between a CPU and GPU but it looks like your on 1156 socket so it's going to be hard to find a CPU that you can upgrade too.
