I'm currently finishing up my Junior year, and will be a Senior next year (of High School). I've recently picked up a CompTIA A+ Cert. study book and am progressing through that. I've done some looking around, but has anyone ever heard of a small PC repair shop/business (pc repair, troubleshooting, installing hardware/software, etc...) offering part time jobs to students, say 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. or 4 p.m. - 10 p.m.? (Currently live in Michigan) if that makes any difference.

I was just curious if anyone has heard of such a thing. Thank you!

Yes; they exist. I don't know of any in Michigan though. I don't live there.

Gigs like that are often obtained via family and friends. "Joe's son GMP is really good with that stuff. Maybe he can help out."
Leverage your current contacts.

Or you might try some volunteer work in that line. Build up your skill set and resume.

USAFRet is on the right track.

This could be an alternative too:

See about shadowing at any local PC Repair Shops or any companies large enough to do a help desk. Before I transitioned from Corporate to SMB Managed IT Services, we regularly had a few kids that shadowed us for a few weeks to see what normal break/fix type stuff is. If it's a small business (PC Repair Shop) you can ask the owner. If I owned a repair shop, I wouldn't mind someone shadowing my backroom staff so long as they weren't disruptive.

You can use that to make sure you are up to snuff regarding technical skill level. Make sure that is something you really want to do.

From there I would recommend talking with PC Repair Shop owners to see if you could find some part-time work. I'm not sure how densely populated your area is, but I doubt that many of the smaller shops would advertise job openings. Your best bet is to call around (or if you live relatively close, just visit the shop).

Thank for your reply's. I never thought of volunteer work. Not really planning on doing it for the money (though it is nice), I just love working with computers.

@cscott_it, That's not a bad idea either. I'll probably end up calling around or just driving up to the place, seeing if they could use someone for a few hours a day to work on repairs or upgrades or builds. Not too sure if that's exactly how it works but we'll see. Hopefully being CompTIA A+ certified and having built a few computers will mean something to some shop out there.

Best of luck with your local search! Hopefully you can find something. Getting experience in now will definitely help pay off in the long run. (Experience is king)
