Im looking to upgrade the ram on my server. I have 12g now. If I get this http://bit.ly/18dhsnU it'll take me to 24g (that's the same brand / type ram I have now)

My question is -- is that ram decent, or is there something better out there?

Hello Joey,

Yes, certainly there are other memory which maybe better than the one which you have mentioned. But when upgrading server you ought to do with caution. You will have to match the existing memory, the speed, timings, ranks and much more. Hence, if you can let me know the server model name and number, I can be able to confirm if it supports or not.

The info you have given is insufficient, with the processor model its difficult to track down a Supermicro
motherboard.

Anyways, if you are sure that your existing memory is the same as the one you have mentioned then you can go ahead with the same, as they might work fine. But check your manual before you proceed with the purchase.

my mistake -- the servermicro model umber is X8DTL-iF

I have someone suggesting Kingston UDIMMs instead - but that would mean lower amount of ram. If I double up what I have I'll be at 24g but if I go with the Kingston UDIMMs and spend about the same I'll be at 16g

That's alright.

Yes, UDIMMs can be obtained at a relatively lower price but the problem with it is max you can upgrade is 24GB** while you can upgrade upto 96GB with ECC Registered (RDIMMs) memory.

Note: UDIMMs and RDIMMs cannot be mixed.

So based on the memory you need, you can make a decision but you had mentioned in one of the earlier post that your existing memory is same as the memory in the link mentioned in the original post (OP). If that is the case, which means your existing memory is ECC Registered and hence you will have to remove ECC registered memory to accomodate the UDIMMs as they cannot be installed simultaneously.

Imagine you go with 24GB of UDIMMs but in the future when you need a memory upgrade, you will have to sacrifice all the UDIMMs just to make way for the RDIMMs which is nothing but wasting a reasonable amount in between the tiring process.

So wave your options and go accordingly. If you were me then I would go with RDIMMs :
1. as it the same memory which is currently working fine in my system
2. the extra memory upgrade capability which can be of a great use in the server environment.

Goodluck!! :)
