Gray monitor desk top

My window Xp. Has a gray screen. No icons no start button. I can't access my desktop. I've tried to rebooted. Unplug and reconnect. Same problem.
Any suggestions.
Wonder if its my Moniter or CPU.
Any help appreciated

Do you know someone who can loan you a monitor to test and see if the monitor is the problem? During the boot process do you see anything on the screen or is it gray as well? If you can see something, have you tried booting into Safe Mode (press F8 shortly after you turn on the computer)?
