Recommend a router

I am setting up a lab at home to learn more about messing with around with networking, especially QoS and mail servers. I will need a decent QOS router with enough capability that I can specify bandwidth ranges (as in give this connection X amount of mbps bandwidth, not just generic high/medium/low priority). What router might fit my needs?

You can get a Cisco or Juniper branch office router for that.

Juniper SSG-5's are EoL and should come cheap too.

Now if you just want to play with it, use a decent SoHo router. Check them out on Newegg or Tiger and backtrack to the manuals.

I perceive SoHo to mean common Linksys WRT and Netgear wireless routers, which lack the level of QoS I would like to experiment with.

Also, it occurs to me that I might be using the wrong term with QoS. It might be that what I'm more interested in is traffic shaping. I want to be able to, for example, put a cap on how much bandwidth certain users can consume for high bandwidth applications, leaving some reserved for other applications (such as web browsing, VOIP, SMTP, etc). The sort of basic QoS that comes on your basic Linksys router isn't going to handle that so I need something more.

Edit To Add: I think what I'm really looking for is hardware that will do for an entire network what NetLimiter does for a single machine. Does that make sense?

Yes, get it.

either get a Juniper or Cisco SMB/Branch router or build a Linux box with Router software. I've seen builds for them out there.

You'd basically take an older PC, add a second NIC to it and install the ISO with the router package and away you go.

I have concerns about the performance of using an old computer as a router. I'm not terribly interested in accepting any increased latency if I can avoid it. Still, I will look into it.
