I bought a hard drive from ifixit.com which is 2TB to replace the one in my iMac, (2133). The old drive was 500gb. The computer works great now. The only thing now is, that the fan(s) is/are always running. Could this be because it's a 2TB drive? If so, how can I solve the fan issue? Would it be better to return the drive back and buy a 500gb instead? Thank you in advance for your help. ~Ella

It might be because you've got a drive that runs at a higher temperature, but I doubt it. Try downloading core temp to monitor your temperatures.

Thanx for your response. Do I just google "core temp" from the web? Or do you recommend particular one? Thanx again! -Ella

Some iMac's use non-standard hard drives, they have the internal temperature sensor connected to a couple of spare power pins, if you bought a standard drive it won't have the sensor and the fans will go full speed; if you google it there is a fan speed control utility you can install to limit the fan speed.

Sorry, it's been awhile since I last posted here with my question. I called the company that I bought the hard drive from, and they suggested I re-check all my connections. Sure enough, I had overlooked a tiny connection on one of the fans and connecting it stopped the fan from being on constantly. So, my 20" iMac works perfect now! All you dads have a super Father's Day and thanx everyone for your help! ~Ella

Wonderful, I'm glad that everything worked!

Hate it when it's something so little like that - they're easy to miss, but make you feel dumb when you do.
