Need to replace PSU...

My setup is as follows

PSU: Win Power SL-8460BTX with total output 450W (complete with broken fan)
Motherboard: ASRock G31M-GS
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400
memory: 4Gb (2x2Gb) 800Hz DDR2 RAM
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT
HDD: Maxtor STM3500418AS SATA 500Gb

This will not be used for gaming but I want to be able to do video editing in basic HD (720p) and it was when doing some of that for the first time that the PSU gave up and although it now works, the fan's busted. I don't want to try to take it apart and replace the fan, but am fairly happy replacing the PSU myself.

Any thoughts on what kind of PSU I'd need to support this usage. Do I need more than 450W or just a newer, better made 450W PSU?

Thanks guys

You will probably be fine with a 500watt PS, but you may want to consider getting a PS with a "Gold" standard as they are more efficient and will use less power from the wall. A more powerful PS will be even more efficient as most PS's run the coolest and use the least power from the wall when putting out 50% of their rated power. This of course costs more, but the power saving can pay for the higher cost over time. A PS should also be considered a long term purchase. A higher quality PS can last 5+ years and be used for many upgrades and or builds over time. Here is an interesting link that shows relative quality of PS's in a "tiered" list. There are many links too, for additional reading:

You could get away with a decent 400W PSU.

AVJ guy, your point is valid, but he won't ever even get close to like 400W, more like 100W-200W. No point really wasting more money on Gold, especially at such a low load. At most, he'll save $10 a year.

What about running a browser with 30+ tabs open at once, including streaming video, and running torrent program at the same time, is that gonna significantly add to my power requirements if I'm rendering video too, or is it really only gaming that demands a lot of power, and hence why you're suggesting 400W might be fine.

Thanks again!

That list looks pretty useful, thanks.

Not quite sure whether you two are agreeing that my requirements would be between 100w and 200w or not... if so is 500w PSU too high, or just building in a good margin of safety, or whatever, as it performs best at half load? I'm looking at the Antec VP 450 as a possible option, what do you guys reckon?
