i5 3470 or FX 6300

I have arranged 2 builds:

AMD Vishera FX-6300 3.5Ghz Cache 8MB 95W AM3 120$
ASUS M5A97 EVO (AM3/AM3+ , AMD970, DDR3) 130$
Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Blue PC12800 8GB (2X4GB) 75$
Total 325$

Intel Core i5 3470 3.2Ghz Cache 6MB [Box] Socket LGA 1155 195$
MSI B75A-G43 (LGA1155, Intel B75, USB3, SATA3) 90$
Corsair DDR3 Vengeance Black PC12800 8GB (2X4GB) 75$
Total 360$

so which one do you guys prefer? i am considering the FX 6300 also because i've heard that the next-gen AMD cpus will still use the AM3+ socket. which makes the board a little "future-proof"

I've also known that the 1155 socket is dead (?) and I can use the extra 35$ to the GPU's budget.
I will mainly use it for gaming and video editing (AfterFX, C4D, Premiere) and I am willing to learn to OC (have never OC'ed in my entire life :p )

Oh I see. In that case, it may be best to get the 6300 and, check if your rendering and graphical production programs can use CUDA. If they do, get a better GPU (GTX 660 sounds good here), if not, get a better Radeon GPU (7870 sounds good here.)

I have the exact same i5 on my photo processing computer that's been up and running for six weeks now. It works fine with both Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. I'm not a game player so I don't need to overclock.

- Cant overclock with i5-3470.
- i5-3470 is significantly more powerful than the 6300.
- AM3+ will be used in the next AMD generation. 1155 is dead.
- Both will do what you want, but the GPU is a very important component. Which GPU are you using? If its very low end, it may be worth getting the 6300 to balance out the build.

Take them as you will.

You really cant go wrong with either. The I5 will be slightly better for gaming, the 6300 will be slightly better for multi-tasking. If you overclock the 6300 you can make up the majority of the difference. Being a 95watt processor the 6300 is easy to overclock. I've had the previous generation 6100 running at 4.0ghz for more than a year now and LOVE it. Great processor for dirt cheap. If your budget is tight then like you said you can put the extra money towards another part. I've heard the same rumors that AMD will do one more socket AM3+ generation of chips so am hoping for a future upgrade as well.

I am leaning towards the 7850 2gb from Msi or the GTX 650 Ti Boost also from Msi..
Yeah I am taking consideration of the dead 1155 socket.

Maybe I'll upgrade to a more capable CPU when steamroller comes out. (another advantage of AM3+)

Okay, I don't think that my programs support Cuda (from a brief googling).. I will look into it..
