Task Manager crashes on open, no error message

Hi, i've installed windows 8 and i have quite an issue with the task manager. From time to time, it will just crash on open and it'll keep doing so if i keep opening it. If it crashes in advanced mode then when i open it again it'll be in the simple, smaller mode, but nonetheless, it will crash anyway. The window called task manager will open for a few seconds, but the inside is completely white (if clicked on, the window says "not responding"). After a few seconds, it crashes to desktop, no error messages. I'm not sure when (probably after restart), but after a while it just goes away and i can open the taskmgr again. It's really annoying, taskmanager should always run...

Here's the event log for the crash:

I've already tried scannow, reseting the taskmanager config in the registry... I'm pretty sure i don't have any malware.. but anyway this started as soon as i installed windows so it can't be a virus or windows update. You guys have any ideas?

thanks in advance,
Federico

Hi Frederico, & Welcome to Tom's Hardware!

Might run the System File Checker as listed below using the CMD applet (runas Administrator), to see if that will repair it.
SFC /SCANFILE=C:\Windows\system32\taskmgr.exe

Also check your Event Viewer, Custon Views, Administrative Events. to see if it points you to the problem or to an Event ID that the MS web site might have a solution.

Thank you John, for the timely response. However, i've already done everything you mention.. the scannfile said everything was in order and i've googled the event id, exception code and such to no avail. I posted the logs hoping someone with a keener eye than mine would spot something i missed. I think this wasn't included in the stuff i posted earlier, so i'll put it down here:

I read somewhere that dump files might come in handy, but i've no idea where to find them...

Dump files aside, i'm really lost here, i don't wanna reinstall windows, any ideas as to why this might be happening, or how to fix it?

How far along are you in installing all your applications and utilities that you want on Win-8? Also was this a Win-8 upgrade, as compared to a clean install?

The fact that Scannow reports no problems makes me wonder if there is a conflict with a service or installed app that auto starts in one of the Run registry keys. CCleaner which you have, has a section where you can temporarily stop each autorun program individually. If you are not too far along, consider uninstalling your apps, one at a time, to see if the problem clears.

In the Win-8 troubleshooting section, there are 18 troubleshooting wizards. There is one called system maintenance. Try running that to see if any issues are identified.

Another thing to try is to logOn under a different (temp or guest) account, and see if the taskmanager runs OK. That would tell you if your User Account could be corrupt.

Lastly, you could go to the recovery environment, and do a Refresh Windows, which will reinstall Win-8 but not bother yours applications. Some setting have to be reset after a Refresh.

Just suggestions to try for an occult problem!

SOLUTION

First, thank you for the solution. I had exactly the same issue as the poster of the topic. It seems that Avast was blocking Taskmgr.exe so I added an exception in the Behavior Shield. Now it works fine.
