Often, typically while playing games (this seldom happens on the desktop), my screen will begin to glitch like this. Then my computer will crash. It sucks, and is driving me nuts.

*scenario a* I can usually alt tab out of the game to the desktop to prevent a crash.

I have tried swapping the card into a different PCIexpress slot.

I have also used the other set of PSU cords (12v?).

Sometimes after the computer crashes, it will not post boot.

Sometimes if the screen begins to flicker and I feel a crash about to come, I can reach into my tower and wiggle the card a little bit. Sometimes this will delay/stop the crash from happening. Sometimes it does nothing.

*scenario b* And... SOMETIMES (maybe once or twice) the card has recovered from a crash similar to the one in the video above.

The screen will also flicker like that shortly after booting (while displaying the windows splash screen)

In GPU-Z it shows that my GPU Core Clock, GPU Memory Clock, and VDDC all spike at the same time. Here are screen shots of GPU-Z after scenario a: one, two, three, and four. Here are screen shots of GPU-Z after scenario b: one and two.

I have searched around quite a bit, and haven't been able to find any similar issues.

Here are my computer specs:

  • Windows 7 OS
    ASUS MOTHERBOARD P7P55D-E PRO P55
    Intel Core i7 Processor i7-870 2.93GHz 8MB LGA1156
    XFX Radeon HD 5870 Graphics Card - PCI Express 2.1 x16 - 1 GB DDR5 SDRAM 256
    G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
Corsair TX850W 850 Watt Power Supply
    LG Blu-ray Drive
Western Digital Caviar Blue SE16 3.5in 640GB, 3.0Gb/s SATA Internal Hard Drive, 7200 RPM, 16MB Cache
Thanks for your time.

Sounds like your 5870 is on its way out. The problems you are having relate to ram going bad on the card. Also you could try taking the card apart removing everything from it, cleaning the gpu and re-applying thermal paste, also remove dust from the heatsink and fan.

Your psu could also be at fault. Have you tried another just to be sure.

Before tearing the card apart, check your documentation, XFX used to have a long warranty, it may still be valid.
Otherwise usual first rules apply: Update all the drivers, reset the BIOS to stock defaults and check all the cables are securely connected.
Could also be a RAM or CPU issue.
Check the CPU temperature/cooling fan operation.
Swap the memory modules into different slots.
Underclocking the card can help.

Okay thanks for the advice. I already followed the first rules prior to posting this. I realize it could be a RAM issue.

Temperature is fine. Fan is functional.

I already swapped the memory modules into different slots.

How can I underclock the card? Can I used EVGA Precision? Is there a better tool to underclock? Do you have a recommended setting (clock range)?

Also: Sometimes when this glitches I just see my VDDC spike in GPUZ. Can you explain VDDC to me? What is it exactly?

Thanks again!
