Consoles last longer than PCs because console developers are constrained to existing hardware. Whereas PC developers can move forward with new technology.

Since consoles can go 5+ years between releases, they last that long. PC components are generally released yearly.

Moral of the story is, its a never ending battle to keep up with PC gaming. Buying the absolute best tech today only delays the inevitable a little bit longer.

i havent the time yet to see the stuff that microsoft revealed for their next xbox but i heard that it will not be backward compatible with 360 games. this area is i think that pc has the advantage. for example the original star craft still able to play just fine on my machine using windows 7. of course not all old games will be compatible with latest OS or run with compatibility mode but with pc having more than 1 OS is not uncommon.
