I have an older motherboard. I know the best answer is to upgrade with new mb and processor since I have already upgraded the psu, hd, ram, etc. But I'm really trying to milk this sucker. My motherboard is an INTEL DG31PR. I've already upgraded it with a Q8300 2.50 GHz CPU and maxed out the ram, new SSD. Graphics cards is a NVIDIA 550ti, 800W PSU. SWTOR plays well, but still has a hint of lag. I'm not satisfied and would like to upgrade with the best CPU before shelling out more cash for a new build. I've located the compatible cpu's from the Intel Support page:
http://processormatch.intel.com/CompDB/SearchResult.aspx?Boardname=dg31pr

I appreciate your advice on what kind of processor I should use, without breaking the bank. Thanks,

Chad

Spending money on a new CPU for that board won't really make much of a difference for SWTOR. The best bang for your buck would be a better video card and SSD. And those you can take with you when you decide to do a new build.

I would get into your internet connection speed. I was running a Q8200 on an asus p5nd-sli boad with 8gb of ddr2 800 and a evga 460gtx the 768mb version with the 192bit interface. I noticed lag on some things. I ended up building a newer system a amd 8120 with 16gb ddr3 1600 and an evga 680gtx 4gb version.

I notice the same exact lag in different areas in games. Or encounter lag in areas with a lot of people where your simply being starved of packet flow from your cable provider. Could be as simple as a bad switch at the node your connecting to, where it has not completely failed but you get bad signal.

Forgot to mention intermittent lag is a problem with mmo's, I even ran a ssd in both my rigs and picked up the same lag when its pushing a lot of data.

Both my rigs ran under 60C. But I had to get aftermarket cooling for the Q8200 I was runnnig to keep it there under load. Make sure your not overheating, don't forget your northbridge runs hot too, my board had an optional fan. I would look at the airflow in your case and keep an eye on your temps. I went with fans getting over 40CFM, and then customized my case by putting side fans in over the cpu/northbridge area. That got me under 50C under full load on just air cooling in the middle of 100F days.

Great advice thanks...yeah the problem seems to be when I am in PVP with a lot of people. Incidently my other rig, which is using a ASROCK board, I7 2600K, 16 gigs of ram does just fine. I'll take all advice into considesation. Thanks again!
