Hi everyone. I have recently put my new computer together and am experiencing a problem I've never had before. I can't seem to find a solid answer anywhere. I have an ASUS M5 A97 LER2.0 and a Western Digital WD Blue WD10EZEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - OEM. BIOS recognizes the drive at 0.0Gb and so does Windows 7 when I try to install it. The drive gets power and spins up. I've tried different SATA ports, wires, etc. I cleared the CMOS once. Strangely enough the BIOS recognized the drive at the correct capacity at start up after clearing the CMOS, I exited BIOS and attempted to install Windows again, it showed up as 0.0Gb in the installer, and now in BIOS it shows up as some crazy high number. Is the drive just defective or am I missing something? I have read one post that a BIOS flash solved this problem but I'm not comfortable with that unless it's a must...thanks in advance for your help! I'm eager to use this new computer.

I turned it off for the night and was going to pick it up tomorrow when I saw your reply. i turned the PSU back on in the back and fired up the comp and loaded to BIOS to make the chnages and nothe drive shows up with the name and proper size in BIOS. I have Windows up now and the "Starting Windows" screen is up and taking a long while to bring me to the installer. Is the HDD formatting itself now? I have no idea but I can hear it running and the HDD light is lighting up (which it was doing before). I'll keep you all posted and keep your fingers crossed. It's taken me 6 years to build a new computer...I don't want some dumb simple hard drive holding me back from entering the new...

Unfortunately my old desktop setup won't work anymore. It gets power but doesn't do anything...not even POST so I have no other system to test the WD on. In the Advanced BIOS it shows 0.0Gb but in the ASUS EZ MODE it shows the drive as having 2097152MB. Now, the optical drive shows a UEFI and BIOS boot, but the HDD only shows a BIOS boot and I can't seem to find a manual switch. Both drives are set to AHCI.

[UPDATE] The HDD shows up now and everything looks okay but Windows 7 says it can't create a partition or find an existing one. The HDD is clear and OEM so there's obviously nothing on it...any ideas or is this thing shot?

[UPDATE 2] Okay I went ahead and RMA'ed the drive for a replacement. Obviously something was wrong with the first one. I tried nearly everything to determine what the problem was. I tried different cables, different ports, setting to IDE, only plugging it into the power supply, etc. The first drive made a rhythmic read/write noise even though it technically wasn't doing anything. Sometimes it showed up in BIOS as a 1TB drive, on other start ups it didn't show at all, and on others it showed as a 2TB drive. I'm suspecting there was something wrong with the controller in the unit, especially given the weird noise it was making. Thanks for the ideas though...hopefully the new drive works so I can play my games finally!
