It's all in the title but I was just wondering if I could overclock a AM3 cpu on a AM3+ Motherboard. As I will be soon buying a AM3 CPU for a AM3+ Mobo.

Details:
CPU- AMD Phenom ii 3.4ghz 965 Black Edition.
MOBO - Do Not Know Need Assistance.

I also need assistance for buying a motherboard that will overclock the cpu and the same socket obviously.

I can only find some of these motherboards...

Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 990X Socket AM3+ 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 990FX Socket AM3+ 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

Wonder if you know if these have OC features and how can you tell?

Thanks!

I own a M5A99X R1.0 ( same as R2.0 except 1 16x lane instead of 2 ) an 8350 and I also ran a 6100 and a 965 on this MB. I used Asus's AI suite and the TPU switch to successfully overclock all of these CPU's. The software has multiple levels of overclocking, so you can start with a mild overclock in the performance mode and then jump to the extreme mode. From there every type of manual overclocking is available with easy to use sliders to push your CPU as far as your cooling and CPU will allow. If you are not an overclocking expert, this is an excellent board to learn on since it shows you the values of the Vcore, bus and multiplier as it increases the overclock in each of the automatic modes ( performance and extreme ). The extreme mode will overclock your Ram too!

Well someone else recommended a ASUS M5A97 R2.0 and said they could OC on that board. It is cheaper as well for my budget which is just around the £80 mark. Thanks for the information though much appreciated :)

Yes, I believe the new R2.0 has the same TPU, EPU ( an Economy mode, which also works amazingly well ! ) switches and the AI suite. I am sure it would work great! It almost replaces the older M5A99X, like mine, as it only has one 16X lane, but if you are only going to run one GPU, it should work quite well.
