Hi,
I purchased a SDD drive a While ago and replaced my HDD with it (only have one hard drive slot). I used my windows 7 install disk to install fresh operating system on SDD (now upgraded to windows 8) and just left the win 7 OS on my HDD. I just bought a hard drive caddy and put my HDD back in and was hoping I could dual boot my old windows 7 along with 8. I can see my windows 7 drive now but I think it caused problems because after install when I right click my explorer crashes and I can't get into event log it says it couldn't open it in a timely manner. Is it because I didn't wipe it first and they are conflicting? Also the HDD doesn't show up in BIOS and I have a Dell L502x. Thanks in advance for your help!

My Asus MB has a function, I think F6 ( it tells you in the BIOS ) , but point is drops down a list of HDD's even the ones not shown in the boot priority. I have 3 SSD and 3 HD's and the list will show them all and I click on one in the list and it pops into the boot priority. See if your MB has something similar!
The right click problem sounds like a system error. Try putting you W8 disk in and running the Fix my System option, see if that helps.

The W8 install didn't recognize the W7 on the other drive so, it was not part of the boot partition for dual booting. If you can go into your BIOS and set the USB before your SSD in the boot priority, you could boot from the external drive, but you would have to shuffle the boot priority every time you wanted to change OS's. And you should expect the W7 to run slower than it did on the internal sata when it is through the USB bus!

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I just realized that I didn't make it clear that I ment I bought an internal caddy to replace my optical drive. Do you have any idea how to get win 8 to recognize win 7? Shouldn't the win 7 drive show up in the BIOS as a hard drive since its plugged in via Sata?

Yes it should. I thought you said it did show up in the BIOS in your first post. You should still be able to boot off either the SSD or HD, but it will be a bit time consuming, since you will have to re-arrange the boot order each time. You will not be able to run a W7 program when you are in W8 and visa versa. You can only store and read basic files, like pictures, music and movies from the other drive.
