Hey guys. My sister just gave me this old shuttle that she got for free from a friend when her laptop went out. I now have it and I am hoping to have some fun with it. The case is in excellent condition and I think the hardware is fine too, though extremely dated. Any suggestion on salvaging this case and maybe making it a little media box?

If you plan on using the old hardware, install GNU/Linux.

Consider Ubuntu. At www.ubuntu.com for example. It's an OS

just like Windows is, but it's far superior at running on old hardware.

There's also a "distro" called XBMC or something along that. It's a

distro meant for making media centers.

Otherwise you could perhaps see if you can't find a mini or micro-ATX

motherboard in there if you dare. If you need space, perhaps you can just

cut out the sides if needed.

I am hoping to run xp or windows 7 on a totally new hardware setup, but I also like the idea of running Ubuntu as I have done that on laptops in the past. Do you, X79, or anyone else, have any experience, or have heard of anyone, modding/retrofitting these older shuttle cases with new hardware?

Well XP is a system which is over 10 years old. Very vulnerable to attack.

Windows 7 is on the way out, if you ask MS about them stopping support for it soon.

So I think GNU/Linux is definitely a good choice. It's free. Gives you more FREEDOM, is

modern. Fast. Secure. Changeable and works on ancient hardware.

I've heard of plenty cases (pun intended!) where people mod their old cases. I'm sure

you can find plenty of it if you care to search for it.
