Before this is recategorized, I placed it here because I have eliminated that the problem is a keyboard itself. I'm hoping to discover whether this is truly a motherboard issue or perhaps anything else someone knows about.
Issue: Keyboard appears to constantly be "pressing" the backslash key. Damage and usage leading up to the issue: unknown. A friend borrowed it and it returned this way with the claim it just occurred one day.
Specs: Toshiba Satellite L355D series; AMD Turion X2 64; 2ghz; Windows Vista; 3gb ram; probably 5-7 years old.
Troubleshooting: I have replaced the keyboard completely to find that the system still is constantly registering the backslash key. (Windows error noise is constantly playing when no textarea is open, and when any text area is active, endless "backslashing" occurs. Attempting to reboot into safemode was futile as I was unable to use the keyboard to select safemode from the menu (presumably because it was "occupied" by a constant backslash press.)
Next I disconnected the keyboard and plugged in a usb one. I was able to boot into safemode using the arrow keys on the usb board, huzzah! I thought I had the problem narrowed to the mobo regarding the ZIF keyboard.
However, as soon as the os booted, the problem occured again. Odd!
Next test was to check if it occured in DOS mode; and guess what... hello endless backslash without the OS running.
I think its safe to say it's not a virus... I think but i dont know. Anyone with the slightest idea of what this could be? Tried googling similar occurances. They do happen to more people than I thought but with different keys. No one has found the problem.
