Eyefinity setup across 2 x 7970 Graphic Card

I guess a system specification is the first place to start.

Coollermaster Full Tower case 1300 W PSU
ASUS Motherboard
I7 processor
32 GB RAM 4 x 8GB Gaming RAM
2 x Radeon 7970 ATI Video Cards
Samsung MD230 x 6 23" 1920 x 1080 Screens
Windows 7 64 Bit Professional

Ok so the thing I want to know and I have searched everywhere, is the setup guide to run Eyefinity across all screens in a 3 x2 Format running 5670 x 2160 resolution. using two video cards..

I am getting the general feeling that eyefinity may not work across multiple video Cards from what I have read so far.

To be clear I have 3 monitors attached to each card. 2 on mini DP and 1 on DVI on each card.

I can create 1 eyefinity group 3 x1. I guess associated with 1 card but cannot get a 3 x 2 configuration working and would really like to do that for various reasons, one being for my son who wants to play games...

Is there any guide out there or can anyone help with establishing the setup for 3 x 2 (5760 x 2160) and have a single virtual screen..

I understand that I could purchase an ATI Radeon 7870 with 6 mini DP ports but given the age of the current cards (less than a month) i really dont want to go to that expense...

I do not have crossfire configured as I understand that will turn off the I/O on 1 card and have currently got all 6 screens working.

Any help or a point in the right direction would be appreciated.. I have read all of the ATI / radeon stuff and have seached several forums.

3x2 is HORRIBLE for must games. Bezel right in the middle. 5x1 portrait is much better. Anyway, since you didn't do your research first you'll need some of these

And BELIEVE me you're going to need crossfire to try and drive them.

Thanks for the answers straight up,, I do have a real reason for the 3 x 2 outside of gaming it is not the primary purpose, there was no research around gaming done. But given it is here and setup I thought I would do the right thing by my son and give hime the wrap effect if possible.. If its not so be it... but will keep on listening to you all for any advise.. Seems to me the MST Displat port is the option and run the crossfire to assist in the performance... Seems to be a better choice that the 7870 with 6 mini display ports as these don't support crossfire yet from what I have read...

I'm not here to give parenting lessons but doing the right thing by your son isn't just buying him expensive things. I would go with 3 screens in Eyefinity and then one larger screen on top no in the group. Have you already brought all this stuff or are you planning on buying it?

No guys, I have had the screen system for some time..... It is my primary system for my home office / job, I work at my home etc and have the system primarily for that. I currently run the systems in desktop extended mode so for the purpose it was designed to do it works perfectly.

We stumbled across the Eyefinity capability and thought give it a go. My son is enthusiastic about this to see if it can work... So this is why the research and the questions.. As I have said if its cannot be done it cannot be done it is really quite that simple.. I didn't buy the system for gaming, I don't buy my son expensive toys without doing the research. My son does have a perfectly capable gaming system.. We are just trying to see if it works and see if the 6 screens gives a different experience. If I have presented this any other way than this I apologise it was not the intent.

The strangest thing about all of this is the computer shop I bought the cards from apparently have it working across multiple cards and their technicians are talking me through this tomorrow to " apparently" get this done I guess there will be a very different conversation if it doesn't actually get to work as claimed.

Sorry if that came out the wrong way, I just hate to see rich families just buying there kids stuff and thinking that's all they need to do. What 7970 do you have? With some of them that have 2xM-Display ports 1.2 you can get an adapter to make 2 into 6 and run 6 screen Eyefinity on it. I think MSI and a few others can do that.

The cards are 7970 gigabyte 3Gb

They come with 2 mini display ports, 1 HDMI and 1 DVI port.

I have the screens configured with the 2 mini Display ports and 1 HDMI per card.

I have configured crossfire but have turned off in the catalyst control centre so as all screens light up.

The screen system I purchased at a clearance sale from my local PC shop, for 1000 dollars Australian rather than the normal 3500 dollars.

At the time I was aware of Eyefinity and thought this would be a useful function for what I do.. One of the applications I use does not like extended mode in windows and can only fit in the resolution of the primary screen, so I thought that an Eyefinity solution would help the problem with this.. As I have read Eyefinity " fools" windows into thinking a single logical screen,, at 5860 x 2160 this seemed like a good opportunity.

I did question. I had read all screens need to run off the same card. They assured me it didn't. Their senior tech who claims to be doing exactly the same thing with the same screens is coming to my home tomorrow to teach me how it is done,, so I guess we will see.

I'f he is successful trust me I will post the way to do it in detail so we all learn.

I am a network architect , I.e I do network plumbing. I am also a bit of a geek with computers,, at my age I should know better... And I hate being defeated by technology.



So that's where I am at,,,, I guess if the tech has made a false claim about doing a single virtual / logical desktop over two cards we will be discussing in detail the active splitters as described in the other thread,, and then run the crossfire for performance enhancement.

is there any solution regarding the problem you described?
i have the same problem.

i need to run 3X2 (5760x2400) on my 2 cards:
1 Sapphire Vapor-x HD7970 6GB (2 Mini Display ports, 2 DVI, 1 HDMI).
1 MSI 280x 6GB (2 Mini Display ports, 1 DVI, 1 HDMI).
MotherBoard: Asus Rampage II Extreme (using PCI-E Cable Extender - since the Vapor-x is too Wide and i'm out of free space for the other MSI 280x card).
Windoiws 7 64 bit.


the problems are:
1.i eyefinity will work with 2 cards ! i
i tried to create 2 eyfinity groups: each group for single graphic card using 2 Mini-DP and DVI.
that gave me 2 virtual screens.
but when i tried to make 3rd group for unite these 2 virtual screens, my windows crushed each time !!!

so if there's no alternative solution, i am wondering if Mini DP Hub could help, and if it will support the resolution i need (5760X2400 as 3X2) and good performance FPS ...


2. i was hoping to enable the Crossfire option.
and it means i can't connect only the monitors just for the primary card (which is 7970).
any kind of solution for that?

PS. i moved from new 2X GTX760 4GB to ATI because of the Eyefinity!
(nvidia surround doesn't support more than 3 monitors as 1 virtual screen).
i am stuck and i rather not to move to 2X ATI Radeon 7870 as you mentioned.

i mostly use it for for flying practicing at microsoft flight simulator - FSX, (i am pilot student), but i will use it to other games too.
