Hello, I purchased a couple XFX Radeon HD 7950 Core Edition cards (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0074CCDTS/) and then found out that their coolers aren't the best. I am concerned about running these in crossfire mode and plan to test each card one at a time until I am satisfied they aren't going to explode on me.
When researching cooling solutions it seems like air coolers aren't perfect, often leaving various parts of video cards uncooled. Water cooling solutions are crazy complex but certainly an option.
I've looked at the ARCTIC Accelero Xtreme 7970 VGA Cooler (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...). Feedback indicates the VRM and RAM cooling solution included with the cooler (little heatsinks with G1 thermal adhesive) is a joke. It doesn't do you any good to cool the GPU and let your RAM burn up! Unfortunately, it seems this is about the best out there.
Any suggestions? Does anyone here have this card - how is it?
I don't have the card but I have a friend that has the XFX 7950 but only one. I would imagine as these cards are beasts they do get really hot while next to each other as I had the same problem with my old build that had Crossfire 7850s. I had the same high temps that you did but getting a fan on the side panel blowing fresh air into the case and inbetween the cards really helped me.
Hey, sorry for the late reply. I finally removed the metal shroud from each card. Then I purchased a PCIE extender ribbon cable and moved one of the cards as far away from the other as I could. It wound up positioned vertically but upside-down due to the length of the extender cable and PCIE power cables from the power supply. Then I pointed a $20 box fan at both cards at low speed and that was enough to keep them cool. They run at 100% 24/7 around 79 deg C.
