Which SSD? Intel or Crucial?

Solution
Real world, for a at home user, buy which ever is cheaper. I'd love someone to tell the difference between to great brands.
Tomshardware has said this over again, for average Joe, you don't need to buy the top end SSD to get great performance.

With that said, I'd be happy with either. I own an Intel SSD but got it when the price was right, 120GB $100.
I get great performance out of my 520 120GB at home.

I get great performance out of my M4 256GB at work.

Both companies offer great products and would be my go-to choices moving forward. I'm not sure about the M5 series, but I'm sure it's another great series of products from Crucial.

Although, based on my own experience, the 520 is a great performer that I've had no issue with whatsoever. I can personally recommend it.

Solution
I will recommend to get the intel 520, because 1) the M5 just comes out less than few months, usually the new SSD will have some minor problem. Wait for while to buy the new SSD. 2) Intel 520 has a good track records for reliable, performances, and reviews.

It makes absolutely no sense to get an Intel SSD because you have an Intel motherboard. ALL SSD"s are compatible with pretty much all motherboards.

Typically if I don't know what I'm talking about I just don't say anything.

Btw, the Samsung 840 Pro and the OCZ Vector are the fastest SSD's out there. You will notice a small difference between these SSD's and a Crucial m4 or m500 and an Intel 520 or 335.

Crucial's m500 series is nice because they have a 960GB drive. But the difference in performance from a m4 to an m500 is pretty much nonexistent.

If I were to buy an SSD right now I'd go with 840 Pro or Vector for 129.99 for 128GB. If I wanted something cheaper I'd go with 840(regular), or Kingston HyperX 3K for 89.99.

Intel and Crucial are "reliable". But Crucial is toward the bottom of the pack for performance and Intel is at the middle of the pack. ALL SSD's are now reliable. Especially Samsung, Intel, and Crucial. So I wouldn't buy an SSD because of reliability. I'd buy one for good performance for the price.

I own 4 SSD's.. Crucial m4 256GB, Samsung 840(regular) 250GB, Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB, Crucial m4 mSATA 64GB

They have all lasted fairly long and I haven't had any problems with any of them. Samsung's 840 is the fastest of the bunch. And Crucial makes some of the best performing mSATA drives you can buy. At least up until Intel introduced their new mSATA lineup, which is faster.

I'm only choosing between Intel and Crucial because that is what can be customized into the laptop I'm buying. I will take this into consideration when my first SSD dies.

I'll go with Intel then, since the Crucial M5 is fairly new right now. Thank you!

Crucial and Intel are 2 of 4 brands that I normally recommend. Both are very good choices. The other 2 brands I recommend are Samsung and Plextor.

I maintain the ssd database listed in the sticky at the very top of this forum section. Here is the link:

http://www.johnnylucky.org/data-storage/ssd-database.html

Scroll down to the brands and models you are interested in and follow the links to the technical reviews.

If I understand you correctly you are purchasing a laptop and the only to options from the company are Crucial and Intel ssd's. Is that correct?

Yeah, if it were between Crucial and Intel. I'd go Intel. You'll get better performance that way. I've seen an Intel SSD beat a Crucial by being twice as fast in one test. So it's definitely a good choise to go Intel.

Old thread, but have to add this.

From #1 personal experience and #2 someone else's experience, stay away from OCZ! I had an OCZ fail on me, they sent me a refurbished... Same happened to a friend of mine, with the exception that his replacement failed again!

Mine was an OCZ Agility 3, his was an OCZ Vertex 4. My replacement is still working (thank God) but not his...he replaced it with an EVO 850 (great choice BTW!)

Longest ssd drive I've owned (Kingston ssdnow v-series 128gb back in 2009, paid $350 on special! LOL! still kickin!)
All drives (kingston, crucial, intel, samsung) that I've owned with the exception of OCZ have never given me issue at all.
All my machines have been kickin' for 5+ years now with SSDs in them.

My recommendations:

EVO 850
EVO 840
Intel
Crucial
Kingston

I would not recommend any other brand, there might be newer and better brands? I have not had to replace my SSD's in a looong time so I wouldn't know about them.
