I got my first gaming pc yesterday & whenever I start up a game, the pc gets really loud & switches off. I don't have much technical know-how but my flatmate says this is the graphics card(a Radeon 7870)overclocking. Why is it doing this automatically & what can I do to stop it?

No it's not. If you bought it from a builder and it didn't work send it back

Get GPU-Z: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/GPU-Z/ and check if your clocks match your graphics card's specs. Whatever component's fan is ramping up is probably overheating, but it's doubtful that it's due to an overclock.

Likely power supply can't keep up with demands, possibly CPU overheating.

How long is the game running before it shuts off?

You need to check your temps. Don't listen to your friend; he doesn't know what he's talking about.
