Pretty weird problem with hard drive on my laptop

For a while now I've had some problems with my hard drive. It isn't dying yet according to my SMART, even tho HD Tune says I should keep attention on my Interface CRC Error Count. I don't wheather know if it is a hard drive problem or not, but that's why I'm on this forum. Now let me get into the problem:

I've been struggling with this problem for probably a month or two now. I've been noticing that it takes longer to open programs, files, games, etc... and that my pc lags/stutters while doing some activities. I reinstalled windows, but the problems kept coming back.

So yesterday, I downloaded a program to defrag my hard drive. What I noticed during the defragment process was that my pc was as fast as it used to be before the problems showed up. I had a feeling it was because the hard drive was being used more than usual. I then ran an error scan with HD Tune, and while doing the scan my pc was just as fast as during the defragment. Note that it stops being fast the moment the scan/defrag stops. Does anyone know why my pc becomes fast only during hard drive tests? I don't know a lot about hardware so I'm sorry if I didn't explain it well enough.

I can't give you my full system specs right now, but what I can give is this;
toshiba qosmio f750-117
8GB ram
Intel core I7 @2.00 GHz (4 processors, 4 virtual processors)
Nvidia Geforce GT540M with 2gb dedicated memory
A 620GB hard drive @7200 rpm

Any help appreciated :)

Hi

You don't want to run a defrag (Windows or utility such as defraggler) until you have checked the hard disk using the hard disk manufacturers diagnostics software

Seagate bootable dos diagnostics and Western Digital Windows hard disk diagnostics do not worry about only testing their own brand of hard disk.

The UBCD disk image has a collection of hard disk diagnostics programs

If you run a defrag on a damaged hard disk you risk loosing data.

So maybe first step is to backup any personal data in My Documents, email account etc
next step test hard disk

If disk fails and laptop within warrante period contact Toshiba

Have You booted from a hirem boot cd and run a virus scan and malware scan?? Have you ran memtest86 to see if there bad stick of ram. With laptops a lot of times there a lot of vendor junk loaded into the hard drive image. Tried using msconfig and turn everything off in start up but your anti virus software?.. Also made sure there only one anti virus program running on the laptop. Run ccleaner to clean up unused free space on the hd???

The CRC Error Count means there was a miscommunication between the drive and the controller ( motherboard). It maybe or maybe not something wrong with the drive. If it is happening just like you did run a defrag and check the the count again by running HD tune. If the result shows no more error, then your HDD will be fine.

For HDD you need do the desk defrag time to time so that your HDD will be in a good shape.

But the CRC Error Count is saved to the SMART of the harddrive, it can't be reset. That means I wouldn't be able to check if there's still an error or not while defragging
